  • Peaceful site on the edge of a Hampshire village
  • Sir Harold Hillier Gardens 1.5 miles; Winchester 20 minutes' drive
  • Fishing lake available; under a mile to the nearest pub
Lakeside Wild Camping is a place to immerse yourself in nature – those passing through this peaceful part of the world often spot hares, birds, three species of deer and, occasionally, an elusive otter. Located in the green Hampshire countryside, this site is within easy walking distance of the small village Braishfield and close to lots of excellent visitor attractions including Winchester, Paultons Park and the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. Getting here is very much a memorable experience in itself, as you'll need to travel down a farm track through a field of friendly cows (and another field of sunflowers, when they're in season) to reach your pitch. Once here, you can look forward to a good standard of facilities and plenty of space, plus access to a secluded fishing lake (angling is available on site). Itchy feet? Footpaths are on hand to reach villages in the immediate vicinity, making it easy to get to Braishfield's village pub (20 minutes' walk at a leisurely pace) or to explore further afield. A 10-minute drive will take you to the red brick market town of Romsey on the gorgeous river Test, where there are shops, restaurants, cafés and a railway station.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Quiet, small area, fires are allowed, clean toilet and hot water shower.

Disliked Vegetation was quite overgrown. Me and my son ended up with about 5 ticks each on us, some decent landscaping would make a world of difference. The grass was very long and the vegetation from the pond was thick and encroaching. Having designated "tent" areas would help, instead of allowing people to drive all over the grounds, making ruts when it's wet, makes it hard to find a flat area for even a small tent.

Small, secluded spot with animals around.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Nice, secluded, small spot with a quiet lake. Hot shower was nice, no artificial lights, amazing for stargazing (we had a lovely clear sky night as well). Ducks all around and you can park next to your tent, which was great. Hot shower was a treat in the cold evening.

Disliked Getting there was a bit of a challenge. Google Maps shows you the way through a nearby stables, which is incorrect. We had to ask around and find our way. I think it would be beneficial if extra instructions were provided as there was no signage at the entrance to the field. Shower a bit flimsy.

Very quiet, wildlife, basic facilities, easy to find.…

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked The whole experience was wonderful - the peace of the place (if you don’t mind animal noises), was wonderful. Space was good and only a few campers on site. We utilised the on-site firepit which was lovely to sit next to and look at the stars. A table and chairs was available too but only one so take your own if this is something you definitely need. A portaloo was available and a shower.

Disliked Unfortunately the shower was far too hot but this may have been due to someone else trying to adjust the settings which the site owners tell you not to do in their welcome/directions text.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Nice and remote area next to cows and horses

Fire stoves for campfires was provided which was a nice touch, made it easier for us

Disliked The lake was only accessible where people camped their tents so we didn't really use it or see it as we would've basically been in someone else's "territory"

Also the grass was very long we had to use our cars to flatten it down

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Really liked the minimalism here, it’s a stunning place with only 4 pitches and beautiful views of the lake. The only thing we needed was charcoal and wood for our particular pitch and we were able to grill and keep ourselves warm.

There’s lots of animals and sounds of animals around. During the day, there are ducks, a bunch of cows, a horse. At night, while you stare at the stars and look at the moon, you can hear the owls while you go to sleep.

There are water taps, a porterloo and a shower with hot water and that’s all enough!

A great back to basics site
