  • Peaceful off-grid Hampshire site with South Downs views
  • Marwell Zoo 15 minutes' walk away; 15 minutes' drive to Winchester
  • Four acres of countryside and natural habitats; bushcraft activities
Guests from all over the UK, Europe and the US have been to Morelands Copse Camping – with many leaving rave reviews calling the place ‘magical’ or ‘pure heaven’. Several have even ended up staying for longer than they planned, or quickly returning… So what is it about this place that inspires such enthusiasm? Well, the location’s a pretty good start – it has four acres of secluded and private Hampshire countryside to its name, with views over Hensting Valley and the South Downs National Park. Stunning sunsets are also common. There’s a real emphasis on preserving natural habitats here – the grounds are made up of an open field next to wildflower meadows and ancient woodlands, and nearly a kilometre of native hedgerows have been planted to create new wildlife habitats too. All of this provides an ever-changing backdrop of colour throughout the season, but one constant is the lack of light pollution that allows for some stunning stargazing on clear nights. The site is off grid and low impact, but it does have some essential facilities including portable toilets, a hot shower and an additional (and rather fun) Wrigley tin shower with a bucket on a pulley for that real wild camping vibe. There’s also an honesty shop for gas and a few other bits and bobs – other supplies can be picked up in either Eastleigh or Winchester, both of which are about 15 minutes’ drive away. A number of activities are available on site, including bushcraft (willow weaving, learning to build a den and foraging) and arts and crafts using the supplies and materials provided in the crafts den. Alternatively, you might like to take a walk to one of the local pubs for a meal and a couple of drinks – there are two lovely options within 20 minutes’ stroll. The closest bus stop is only 15 minutes' walk away too. For a spa day, head to the hotel in Marwell, which is five minutes' walk away.

Unpowered forest floor tent site (woodland)

Liked: Simple and well kept site in the woods for a good price. The communal area under cover was a nice surprise.

Disliked: Very little signage or pitch markings or visible staff and no site map which led to a confusing arrival. I only received an email while on the way explaining it was a first come first served basis for pitches and just to grab one.i finally noticed that email after wandering round the site a bit confused. Quiet time after 10.30 was not enforced.

Liked: This place felt so magical and fun with the woodland walk to find a pitch and the little details dotted around really added to that. Loved that I was able to have a campfire!

Disliked: The only reason I didn’t give a 5 was although it felt in the middle of nowhere there was still the background hum of main road noise with some loud motorbikes making use of the quieter roads at night.

Liked: This is my second stay at Morelands, woodland camping. I absolutely love the vibe her and everything it has to offer. The communal kitchen and all the decor around the place makes it very charming. Dan, the manager of the camp is on hand by phone to answer any questions you have. Really helpful and the place is super relaxed. There’s an honesty shed, for things you’re likely to forget or want. Firewood, kindle, fire lighter, gas, sweets, some kids toys like bubbles and more! Takes cash and card. The shower and toilet in the woodlands are very nice. The kitchen has a communal cooker - there may be gas there when you arrive if you’re lucky. But it’s not provided, it will be by chance that someone has brought it from the honesty box and left it kindly. There’s kettles, cups, a pan and other kitchen utensils. Complimentary tea and coffee, with a donations jar. And bound to be stuff laying about that others have left in busier seasons.

Disliked: The grass pitch area offers a different vibe than the woodlands. Although you can still access the same amenities. Woodland pitches are all under trees so there’s little to no sunshine. Lack off instructions available to use the shower. Dan will help over phone or text but not helpful when you’re in a hurry. Maybe instructions should be left on the bathroom?

Liked: The campsite was amazing, it was our first time camping as a family of 3 with our 2 year old son, we through ourselves in the deep and a pitch up in the woodland area which we had great fun exploring. Lots of accessories and a great painting area my son enjoyed.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Great views and lovely surroundings, feels remote even though close to amenities and pub very walkable, even with young children. Very relaxed site.

Disliked: We were there in August, lots of wasps around this time of year which was difficult with young kids. Facilities are basic, depends what you’re used to/looking for but be aware especially with young kids.

Unpowered forest floor tent site (woodland)

Liked: An excellent campsite with a safe and secure environment for kids and dogs. We camped in the woodland area which had only 4-5 pitches nicely spaced to provide privacy. Great fun to be able to have campfires and cook outdoors. The facilities were well looked after and whilst low-key / minimal in keeping to their low impact setting, it was enough to make the experience easy. Loved it and will be back soon.

Disliked: Woodland pitches could be larger to accommodate larger tents. Some dead trees around the pitches which could be removed to accommodate.

Unpowered forest floor tent site (woodland)

Liked: We loved the setting and the views. The woodland was beautiful and we loved listening to the animals and the dawn chorus. The honesty shop is a great idea and well stocked. The communal areas are cute and a really nice addition.

Disliked: Could the portoloos be replaced by compost toilets? We wanted a small campsite and thought there would be fewer campers based on the number of pitches advertised - the meadow camping was really busy so we are relieved we were in the woods, even though sound carried.

Liked: Wonderful locatation, beautiful pitches in a gorgeous little forest copse. The staff were super kind and helpful. We had such a wonderful time we can’t wait to go back again!!

Disliked: Some of the porta potty’s were tilted and there were not enough of them for both field and forest. This is not enough to put us off though!

Local attractions

There’s a lot of fun to be had simply knocking about on site – the site is fenced so kids can play and dogs can sniff about safely. That said, this is also a great area for outings, and one of the best is very close by: the excellent Marwell Zoo, which you can reach with a 15-minute walk or five-minute drive for a day among the giraffes, tigers and hippos. This location on the edge of the South Downs National Park also clearly lends itself to walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities – and there’s more of all that in the nearby New Forest National Park (20 minutes’ drive) too. For a complete change of scenery, you might instead fancy city strolls in either historic Winchester (15 minutes) or down in Southampton (25 minutes), where both Solent Sky and SeaCity Museum are handy rainy-day options.
