  • Glamping in a nature reserve between Rickmansworth and Harefield
  • Windsor Castle half an hour’s drive; central London 40 minutes by Tube
  • Hot tub and fitness centre with lake views; cycle hire on site
Peaceful Watercress Beds is located within Stocker’s Lake Nature Reserve, a watery Hertfordshire park popular with nesting herons and migrating ducks. It is also less than an hour’s drive or train ride from London, so it's a place that manages to combine both rural and urban outing options for its guests. Accommodation (for two people, plus one child, if required) comes in the shape of a luxury shepherd’s hut with views of the lake. You can prepare your meals in the well-equipped cooking area (with hob, microwave oven, fridge and sink) and consume them on the outside patio. There’s a large chiminea for extra warmth, and logs are supplied gratis by the owners. If you’re concerned about missing arms day at the gym, worry no more, for the site has a fitness area with weights, Pilates bands and an exercise ball, plus an interactive Peloton bike (with the option of joining online classes if you like). Stationary cycling with views of the lake is all very well, but there's also the option to get closer to the water on two wheels by hiring a mountain bike on site to explore nearby canals and waterside restaurants. Rickmansworth Aquadrome (10 minutes’ drive) has waterskiing and sailing clubs, and there’s kayaking along the Grand Union Canal (15 minutes’ walk). And after all that exercise, you can return to base and have a relaxing soak in the hot tub on the patio (for an additional fee). The town of Rickmansworth, with its restaurants, pubs and supermarkets, is five minutes away by car (or a half-hour walk through the reserve), and there are more waterside pubs and other amenities in Harefield (10 minutes).

Local attractions

You don’t have to be a Potterhead to visit the Making of Harry Potter experience at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London (15 minutes’ drive). Large film sets include the Dickens-inspired Diagon Alley and Platform 9¾, with the Hogwarts Express locomotive. In addition, you can find out the secrets behind the films’ special effects. First built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor Castle (half an hour) houses grand ceremonial rooms adorned with tapestries and chandeliers, and gilded state apartments hung with paintings by Old Masters. It also includes the Gothic St George’s Chapel, where Henry VIII is buried. It’s a 40-minute ride on the Underground from Rickmansworth to Baker Street. From there, you can check out the waxworks at Madame Tussauds London, get up close and personal with the animals at ZSL London Zoo, in Regent’s Park, or visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum.
