  • Off-grid camping on a small family farm at Castle Hedingham in Essex
  • Colne Valley Railway five minutes’ drive; Lavenham 25 minutes
  • Dog-friendly with access to footpaths; pub and shop 15 minutes’ walk
Looking for an off-grid adventure in Essex? Wild Camping at Lawrences Farm should see you right. This back-to-basics pop-up site is set on a family farm just outside the pretty village of Castle Hedingham; accessed via a quiet country lane, the camping meadow is bordered by trees and hedgerows, with mown pitches neatly delineated by two-metre strips of long grass. A 15-minute walk skirting the grounds of Hedingham Castle (do have a look around while you’re there) leads you to the village centre, where you can admire timber-framed houses, drink a pint or two in the traditional village pub and pick up treats for your barbecue from the friendly village shop. The farm is also on the public footpath network, so it couldn’t be easier to explore the local area on foot or exercise any dogs holidaying with you. You can find a wider range of shops in the neighbouring village of Sible Hedingham (five minutes’ drive) or the market town of Halstead (10 minutes), where there are also restaurants and takeaways.
