  • Well-maintained park within walking distance of ancient Colchester
  • Easy access to London, East Anglia, Suffolk and Essex
  • Three facility blocks: never queue for the toilet or shower
Excellent excellent Essex... an easy hour from London, a comely coastline, and close to East Anglia, Constable Country and the Sussex coast for day trips – it's all very excellent indeed. And then there's Colchester, the ancient town settled by the Romans way back when and full of superb sights, museums and leisure offerings – all very excellent too. If you're visiting Essex for any of the above, a march along to high-quality Colchester Country Park should be an excellent option, as it's within walking distance of Colchester city centre and close to the coasts of Essex and Sussex. Arrange a day trip to London from here or use the park as a base to or from ferry ports: but a day or two in Colchester should surely be had too... The park is set in pretty parkland with roomy pitches and spacious fields. Facilities are plentiful – no queuing here – and include three spotlessly kept amenities blocks with private cubicles and free hot water. There's also a dedicated disabled unit, dishwashing and laundry areas, a large play area and a shop.

What customers say

Great site, super clean & friendly staff with roomy, flat pitches. Easy to get to Colchester & sights. Most found facilities top-notch, but some heard traffic noise from the A12. A few said showers were a bit old & no WiFi. Good value, especially for quick trips exploring.

Liked Really tidy, clean and well looked after site.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Lovely looking site, great location for access to Colchester and the A12. Friendly staff and everyone on the site was very friendly.

Disliked Because of its location (next to A12), it’s very noisy.
The pitches are narrow and therefore not wide enough to park your car parallel to your tent.
On first appearance the toilet/shower blocks look clean, but it became obvious that the shower traps had not been cleaned for a very long time.

Liked This was our first time camping and the site was beautiful so peaceful and friendly, toilets and shower facilities was perfectly clean five minutes from a lovely harvest too and Tesco’s and a 30minute drive to some Essex beaches we choose Walton on the naze and had an amazing day.

Disliked Disliked how close the pitches are I would of liked a option to be next to people or abit more secluded..

Liked How clean the facilities were. How tidy the pitches were. The park on site was just enough to entertain the kids, along with a basketball hoop and goal posts. Staff on site very helpful. We could bring our dogs. Everyone there was so friendly.

Disliked How the other people visiting parked their cars. They were not next to their tents but at the end parked right next to us. It got very cramped for us at pitch 40. Also there were only 2 showers at each station. We waited to the evening to shower to miss the queue. Very little area to walk for dogs.

We always try to accommodate our guests and make everything comfortable, Our wardens are always around if needed for any questions etc. There is a big park a 2 minute walk from us and Lexden reserve woodland is a 5 minute walk. Both places are great for walking the dogs.

Local attractions

Classic Colchester is a popular pick for holidaymakers in the area, who come to see Colchester Castle and Castle Museum with its extensive exhibit on Roman Colchester; the social history Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum in the city's former All Saints' Church. Plenty of restaurants, pubs and shops are here too, as well as decent leisure options like a leisure centre, ten-pin bowling, roller skating, the Mercury Theatre, the Arts Centre and the Minories Gallery. If you're on holiday with kids, Colchester Zoo is always a hit, as is the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel which has heaps of activities for young explorers. The Colne Valley Railway's mile of track is at the old village of Castle Hedingham, also well worth a look for its Norman Hedingham Castle and timber-framed medieval buildings. The area surrounding Colchester Country Park is excellent walking, cycling and nature spotting land with miles of nature reserves, footpaths and bike trails: head from Colchester to Alresford a mile and a half away or join up with the 81-mile long Essex Way from Epping to Harwich.
