  • Family-friendly farm site in the High Weald with lake and woodlands
  • A 35-minute drive to Eastbourne and Hastings; 50 minutes to Brighton
  • Communal fridge and launderette on site; pub 15 minutes' walk
To set out on an idle walk among the fruit and nut orchard or to follow a bridlepath into the medieval landscapes of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Walkers are certainly spoilt for choice at Sheherezade Fruit Farm in the East Sussex countryside. Prepare your walking boots for this family-friendly farm site where you can unwind with an on-site lakeside picnic packed with farm-made jams and chutneys, sip on fresh fruit juices, or set off into the surrounding woodlands and lanes towards local fishing lakes and country villages. It's all within 35 minutes’ drive of Eastbourne and Hastings, and with Newhaven port 40 minutes away for links to France via ferry. If you weren’t a foodie before you arrived, you’ll surely be upon your departure. Prefer your mornings sunny side up? Order fresh eggs from the site and for any other supplies, head to the bigger supermarkets in Hailsham and Heathfield, which are within 15 minutes’ drive of the site. Back on site, the resident pigs, sheep and hens await with a cheery welcome home. Once you've greeted them, keep your food fresh in the communal fridge and make use of the other facilities on site, including wifi, launderette, showers and toilets. If you still have room in your stomach, there’s a pub within 15 minutes’ walk, with a pub garden for dogs (welcome on site on a lead) or cosy beamed innards to nurse a pint.

Power optional grass campervan site

Liked: What a lovely few days at Sheherazade! Carol was welcoming and so were the geese, hens, Amber the dog and (my favourite) Blossom the pig. Great location for walks and pub stops. Fresh eggs, sausages and jams are a must from Carol’s stock. Facilities were more than sufficient. We stayed in the top field as needed electric hook up, but I had a stroll down to the lower field pitches by the lake and they looked super if you don’t mind off grid.

Liked: Lovely lake side pitches. A peaceful rural wild camping site set beside the orchard.

Disliked: A two field walk up to the showers and mains toilet which which our little one opted for over the portaloo in the bottom field.

From the manager: Wow. I don't think I should be penalised because Abby was sent full details of the campsite and the fact that the facilities were in the top field but that there were portaloos by the lake in the bottom filed. Sadly, if the email I sent out with full details and instructions were ignored, it is difficult to say that this complaint should be upheld. Nobody else on this very busy weekend had a problem. Exercise is good for you!!!!!

Power optional grass campervan site

Liked: The owner was very friendly and helpful. The site has a beautiful lake and is a nice quiet location (apart from planes overhead).

Disliked: We were asked to camp in the lower field by the lake which is nice but the only loos are porta-loos in a cabin. No running water to wash hands although the owner did supply a watering can and soap to wash hands outside. The bathrooms and washing up area are 3 fields up, which is a do-able walk but would be easier if they were located nearer to the camping area. The bathrooms look new but are unfinished (unpainted). The are no shelves and just one hook. Also the loos are located in the shower rooms (there are 2 of them) and queues could build up whilst people waited. There are no facilities for re-cycling and so everything went into the bin!

From the manager: So, you were told by me that you could pitch up wheresoever you wished but that everybody wanted to be by the lake. I suggested you go down to the lake to see if that is where you would like to be and you didn't come back up. You knew the main facilities were in the top field. I won't even dain to comment on the planes overhead but I'll have a word with Gatwick airport and ask them if they can reroute their planes away from the farm!!!!!!!! Not ever, even over the busiest weekend of the year at the end of August, were there any queues so please don't make statements that are completely untrue. I'm getting the impression that you won't visit again which is fine by me.

Charming, peaceful and well-run site.

Liked: The site is in a really beautiful setting within a working farm, where you pass an orchard and livestock in meadows on your way to the camping field. Pitches surround a pond and the field is framed by mature trees with a view to surrounded hills. Carol is a charming and responsive host and the farm foods on offer - esp pork and apple sausages and jam - were a delicious bonus. Facilities are basic but clean.

Liked: We loved the amazing views, relaxed atmosphere, fire pit, the space in the field i.e there was plenty of space between the tents, the friendly welcome, the simplicity of the camp site and the peacefulness of the site. It was lovely watching the mist rise up from the lake in the early hours. The communal fridge in the main facilities was very useful. In addition to the showers and toilets in the main block, there were chemical toilets in the main camping field and these were kept clean. We were able to hire a firepit/logs for our stay which added to the magical atmosphere. We camped at the top of the field, so we could enjoy the view of the lake and the fields beyond. Bliss.

Local attractions

Tread carefully over the grounds where Normans landed many years ago with a visit to Battle Abbey (20 minutes’ drive). Continue onto the battlefield itself or head into the town of Battle (20 minutes), where the memory of the Battle of Hastings remains. For more trips into times gone by, the well-preserved bricks and moats of Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) make a good contrast to the timeworn turrets of Pevensey Castle (20 minutes). Gaze up to the moon and stars… and discover a world of domes and telescopes at The Observatory Science Centre (15 minutes), where kids can gawp over the different planets. More wonders await, this time from the animal world, at the family-friendly themed rides at Drusillas Park (half an hour) or the barns and farm animals of Middle Farm (25 minutes). Cuddle up to more animals of the furry kind at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (25 minutes). Ready for some more hands-on action? Try the treetop courses at Go Ape Bedgebury (half an hour) or get into watersports at Bewl Water (35 minutes).
