  • Touring pitches on a traditional farm with views over Bewl Water
  • Royal Tunbridge Wells and Hastings within a half-hour drive
  • Within 10 minutes' walk of a 14th-century pub for food and drinks
Escape to the East Sussex countryside and an exclusive break at Coldharbour Farm, where you’ll pitch up in an area right in the middle of a traditional farm. Being in the centre of the grounds means plenty of peace at the pitching area. Your neighbours in surrounding fields are the farm’s sheep, horses, pigs, chickens, ducks and geese – and while they’re unlikely to be silent at all times, they’re generally pretty easygoing. The site also runs a chicken B&B so, although you’re allowed to bring dogs along, you’ll need to make sure they’re well behaved to avoid spooking the feathered guests and other animals. Farmland makes up much of your outlook here (along with the site’s market garden), but it’s not all there is to look at – in fact, this scenic site has views over Bewl Water with the North Downs in the distance. If you’d like to get down to the lake for a closer view, you can wander over there in about 10 minutes or so. Another place that’s well worth walking to is the 14th-century local pub – it’s an easy 10-minute stroll away and serves up excellent food and proper ales. A little further away (about a mile, in fact) is the village of Ticehurst, which has a couple more places to eat and a shop where you can pick up bits to put on your barbecue back at base. It's worth noting that there are no toilets or showers at this touring park, so you’ll need to bring your own facilities.

Unpowered grass and earth caravan site

Liked: A beautiful location, peaceful and lovely owners who were very welcoming. The location is perfect for visiting Bewl water which is amazing but beware trying to walk the 13 mile perimeter in one go!!!! Like we did!!! They also do their own sausages and bacon. Didn’t try any this time as had done a food shop before travelling but certainly will next time. Only a few campers allowed so plenty of space and privacy.

Disliked: The ground is rather uneven but we did find a little spot that only required a couple of blocks to level the van. The grass was a bit long whilst we were there but the owners did explain that they had to replace some tyres on the mower so I expect most of the time it is not so long.

Unpowered grass and earth caravan site

Liked: quiet place walking distance to Bewl water. Nice views and friendly hosts.

Disliked: compared to similar closest sites in Wadhurst and Horam, (and elsewhere) I would say Coldharbour Farm is overpriced. OK if your not concerned by price, but if your priority is best value for money then maybe look elsewhere

Local attractions

Fancy seeing a bit more of Bewl Water? Once you’ve walked over there you can complete the full circuit if you’re feeling energetic – it’s likely to take you a good five or six hours. You can also get round the lake on a bike, or head to the opposite shore (15 minutes’ drive) to sign up for open-water swimming, watersports, fishing or a go on the inflatable aqua park. If you’d like to trade the lake views for wooded ones, it’s about a 10-minute drive to the trails of Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest. Other outdoor wanders might take you to the historic ruins and hop farm of Scotney Castle (15 minutes), the elegant pathways of Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (25 minutes) or a busy day out exploring all that Leeds Castle (45 minutes) has to offer. Time for a town trip? Try Royal Tunbridge Wells (25 minutes), or take yourselves down to the coast for a day in Hastings (half an hour). If it’s a beach day you’ve got in mind, it’ll take you about 45 minutes to drive to the gorgeous dunes at Camber Sands.
