  • Luxuriously converted American school bus with lakeside views
  • Five minutes’ drive to Bluebell Vineyard; 45 minutes to Brighton
  • Private hot tub and firepit outside
If you’re after more than a tad of luxury and originality on an East Sussex sojourn, The Wildaway American School Bus has got all bases covered. Located overlooking a lake in Uckfield countryside, the stylish accommodation is in a skilfully converted vintage bus (yes, the name gives it away really) – and one that’s starred on TV too. That bus now makes a stylish and original retreat for loved-up couples. Whether you’re looking to languish in blissful seclusion on a site surrounded by trees, or get out for bracing hikes on the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’re all but guaranteed a peaceful stay. With an interior divided into three distinct spaces, the bus has a sleek well-equipped kitchen (fridge, oven and microwave all present and correct) combined with a light-filled living area, a smartly tiled shower room (toiletries supplied), and a double bedroom with views over the lake. Outside, the private outdoor space has a hot tub for bubbling away in, and a firepit where you can try your hand at cooking over flames, or just warm your hands while you look up at the stars glittering overhead on clear nights. Custom-made itineraries are on hand for all guests, with lots of clever ideas for things to do nearby so you can make the most of your stay.

Local attractions

If you can overcome the temptation to hang out all day in your all-American bus, there’s plenty to do in East Sussex. At National Trust-owned Sheffield Park and Garden (five minutes’ drive), you can stretch your legs gently with strolls around lakes and through woodland. For more challenging hikes, don the walking boots and follow the network of trails in the High Weald AONB  – there’s something for all levels of fitness. To sample local produce, book wine-tasting sessions at Bluebell Vineyard (five minutes’ drive), or try the artisan ice cream served at Heaven Farm (10 minutes’ walk), and when you’ve had your fill of calorific delights, you can meet albino wallabies and free-range ducks. For more cute animal encounters, take the woolly residents for a trek at Spring Farm Alpacas (five minutes’ drive). If you like the sound of escaping to the coast, the shingle beach and Palace Pier at Brighton are only 45 minutes’ drive away. For views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs, pack a picnic and eat it on the beach at Birling Gap (50 minutes).
