Nestled in the heart of the south downs

  • Peaceful back to basics site in a scenic South Downs village
  • Around a 10-minute walk from the South Downs Way; country pub nearby
  • Woodfired sauna and cold plunge pool for an additional fee
Looking for a simple, peaceful and community-oriented retreat? Based on 33 acres of land in Kingston, a peaceful village in the South Downs National Park, Lovebrook is exactly that. Get back to nature and take in the simple pleasures of the wide-open fields and South Downs views, then sidle over to the country pub a few minutes’ walk down the lane, which has a food menu, outdoor tables and a spacious playground. Lovebrook is part of a multi-faceted ecological community project, so all profits go towards running wellbeing and nature activities for underserved or vulnerable groups. With direct access to the South Downs Way from a 10-minute footpath at the end of the lane, it's an excellent spot for tackling the long-distance trail or shorter walks. The grassy tent pitches are spread over a huge field with rural views and good stargazing (on clear nights). There are plenty of 'home comforts' like composting toilets and washing-up facilities on site, as well as a warm shower set a short walk away from the site. For some TLC, there is a woodfired sauna and a cold plunge pool on site (available for an additional fee). The working farm hosts a market garden on its veg plot throughout the week and you may spot the team hosting groups for the aforementioned nature activities on the land. There's also a standing stone on site; feel free to wander up there for good views and ask the team about its story. Off-ground fires and barbecues are permitted on site. There are no bins or recycling facilities, so all rubbish must be taken away. Cars aren't allowed on pitches, but you'll be lent a wheelbarrow to shuttle your stuff around. Kingston is a peaceful village with a 13th-century lane, so it’s well-suited to quiet, family-friendly breaks. A garden centre is a 15-minute walk away should you fancy a cooked breakfast or at least a coffee and slice of cake.

What customers say

Nestled under the South Downs, this peaceful campsite boasts private pitches in a tranquil, natural setting with stunning views. Guests loved the spaciousness, the beautiful surrounds perfect for walks, and proximity to Lewes & a local pub. Facilities are basic but clean, ideal for a back-to-basics stay. A few mentioned the lack of showers. The site’s ethos, community projects & friendly hosts were big pluses.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Nice flat pitches which were very private due due to the grass mowing. Clean compost toilets.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We loved the beautiful setting, peacefully nestled in the South Downs, close to the town pub and not far from Lewes. A short walk and you are climbing up to the ridge with spectacular views of the downs, all the way to the sea.

It was a relaxed and peaceful campsite and you are left alone by the very friendly owners.

Disliked Toilets and showers are always a challenge (for some) when camping. The loos were just fine and eco-friendly and the shower, while far from luxurious, was conveniently located and warm. Another sink for washing up, separate to the one by the loos would be an improvement. This should not put you off - we'll be going back sometime.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Such a beautiful peaceful site, the pitches are very private and nestled amongst long grass. It’s in the perfect spot to go walking without needing to get in the car, and the local pub which is 10 seconds from the site entrance has great food.

Super close to the town of Lewes which was lovely and we also drove to Seaford for a dip in the sea.

Shower is back to basics but which doesn’t bother me, and was great! The campsite cat and dog really made it too, will definitely be back!! Felt lucky we chose this site

Disliked The compost loos are great and were always clean, but being quite short (5 ft 3) the seat was very high resulting in my feet dangling off the floor when sat down, which wasn’t always comfortable, but honestly barely a fault.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked This is a real gem of a campsite.
Nestled beneath the South Downs with panoramic views in all directions it was hard to believe that you were only a couple of miles outside of Lewes.
The camping plots are so widely spaced it is highly unlikely you would ever be bothered by neighbouring tents.
Although the facilities were basic, everything was exceptionally clean.
The close proximity of The Juggs public house was the added plus point for the site!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Great vibe in this organic farm setting. Really simple place with friendly people. The setting is rustic and quiet with composting toilets that are clean and easy to use.
Nice and handy to Brighton, only 20mins by car and a great little pub just across the road.

Disliked The farm field is exposed to the weather, so expect wind and rain if it is forecast.

Local attractions

Down for some simple exploration? Lewes (10 minutes’ drive or accessible with a walk, cycle or bus ride) has a lively selection of cafés and shops for antiques and arts. There’s much more of that sort of stuff in busy Brighton (20 minutes), of course, not to mention the beach and Brighton Palace Pier. Get there by car, a 15-minute train from Lewes, a bus from Kingston, or with a 45-minute bike ride. Where might you get some sublime views of the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs? Your options include Cuckmere Haven (25 minutes), a beach with watersports, or the rural beach town of Seaford (20 minutes). Beachy Head (35 minutes) is the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain. It’s on the way to Eastbourne (35 minutes), where there are yet more seaside amusements and a huge watersports scene.
