Site overview

  • Wildlife haven on a peaceful farm site in East Sussex
  • A 10-minute drive from Hailsham and 25 minutes from Eastbourne
  • Private woodland; on-site fishing for an extra charge
Under the tender care of the same family for 50 years, Wild Weald Camping is a wildlife haven on a 140-acre farm in Hellingly in the East Sussex countryside. While this is farm life in its traditional incarnation, this family-friendly site is still within easy reach of the local towns. Find tender meat for the barbecue in the market town of Hailsham, a 10-minute drive away, or swap the rural views for beachy ones in Eastbourne, 25 minutes away. This is a peaceful site indeed, where you'll be able to switch off and reconnect with nature and/or your family among quiet pastures and woodlands. There's plenty of space for the kids to make dens and play hide and seek in the private woodland in the south, and there's also a fishing pond where you can try your luck with a rod (extra charge applies; subject to availability). Once you’ve thoroughly explored around the site, head to the lavender fields and medieval manors of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 35 minutes away – walks here are rather like jumping into a landscape painting. Handily, each pitch comes with a map of how to explore the area on foot as well as further afield. But what’s a camping trip without a bit of fireside chat? Don’t fret, you're welcome to bring along a firepit for a campfire, or you can hire one on site (with logs for sale too). And you won’t need to worry about leaving your canine friends behind either, as two dogs are welcome (although you'll need to keep them on a lead).

What customers say

A ripper quiet spot nestled in the bush, loads of room on the sites. Hosts are a bloody legend, always keen to lend a hand. Toilets and showers are generally spick and span with hot water. Great for a bushwalk and checking out the local wildlife. A few reckon the lights are a bit bright and could do with more cleans when it’s busy, but others are stoked about no Wi-Fi for a proper digital detox.

Liked Surrounded by the woods was amazing. Hosts were very relaxed and welcoming. Had a great drink in their pub in the woods, very impressive! There is also an amazing kids adventure park 10 minute drive away!

Disliked Felt that the shower and toilet facilities could be better managed e.g more regular cleaning and topping up of toilet roll.

Powered grass tent or campervan site

Liked Loved the tranquility, being surrounded by woods, and nature. I didn’t spot any deer this time but saw a few rabbits and heard an owl! The location is ideal with lots of beautiful places to walk/run. Pam is really helpful and a lovely person. This is the 3rd time we have stayed here and it was full this time which I was a little concerned about but absolutely no problem. There was still plenty of space as the pitches are really generous and we didn’t feel crowded at all. I even tried the outdoor shower and it was fine and a great alternative as the other showers were in use. The toilets were cleaned regularly and one morning the toilet paper ran out, but I emailed Pam and she came immediately to replace it. If you like nature and don’t like busy campsites but still want electricity and decent bathrooms, this is the place for you.

Disliked I’d love the lights by the toilet block at night to be less bright!!

Unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked We LOVED the camp site! We enjoyed exploring the Woodlands and liked the fact that everything was in easy reach... However, we're were far enough away from the busyness that it was easy to forget about whilst we were enjoying the slower pace of life.
The facilities were perfect for us and the hot water in the showers a real treat.

From the manager: Thanks for your kind words. Was trying to deligniate the pitches with storter and longer grass rather than rope, but point taken.

Local attractions

Ahoy there, me hearties – if you’ve got kids, you won’t want to miss out on Treasure Island, where kids can pretend to be on Captain Hook’s ship for a day on a host of pirate-themed attractions. Elsewhere, take a tumble at Fort Fun (25 minutes), an outdoor water adventure park with all manner of slides. The adventure continues at Knockhatch Adventure Park (10 minutes), where kids will be throwing scraps to meerkats one minute and racing down waterslides the next. It’s not all play pretend, though. After plotting your way through the 300-acre woodlands and formal themed gardens, you can gaze at real moats and red bricks at 15th-century Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) or get starry-eyed using the telescopes at The Observatory Science Centre (15 minutes). Look west and you’ll find Eastbourne (25 minutes) and its colourful art scene, while closer by, you can pack a picnic for the 18-acre Blackberry Farm Park (15 minutes) – just make sure the alpacas and wildfowl don’t nab your sandwich while your back is turned. More chummy animals await at the zoo at Drusillas Park (25 minutes).
