Primrose Park: Grass pitches with views

General

  • Well-maintained and peaceful park a mile away from Gisburn Forest
  • A 20-minute drive from Settle and half an hour from Skipton
  • Barbecues and dogs welcome; a 10-minute drive from the local pub

What say you to pitching up in a peaceful forest clearing? Primrose Park is a well-maintained site on the edge of the Forest of Bowland and close to the Yorkshire Dales, making this spot a particularly appealing base for those seeking back to basics hols filled with rural rambles.

This fine little site is surrounded by green Lancashire lanes and gorgeous forest vistas – Gisburn Forest Hub (10 minutes' drive), a visitor centre with a café, mountain bike trails and waymarked walks, makes a great starting point for exploring both. You'll also likely want to plan a few trips across the Yorkshire border for outdoor jaunts around Malham or shopping trips in the market town of Skipton (both are about half an hour away).

Families (including their canine members) are welcome at this friendly site; there's also an outdoor play area where the tiddlers can play and meet new pals in a safe environment. For sociable evening eats, you can light up a barbecue and get cooking with your clan; if the weather has other ideas, you can always bag yourself a table at the nearest pub, 10 minutes away. Facilities are fairly minimal on site, but you'll have access to two unisex toilet/shower blocks.

Snacks and other supplies can be sorted with a quick trip to the closest supermarket in Settle (20 minutes away by car), where there's also a range of eateries from fish and chips to fine dining and all points in between.

Lovely little campsite. As a group of 5 younger people we weren’t sure how accommodating the site would be. But the owner was lovely. They offered us a fire pit and logs to hire for the evening which was a nice touch to our stay. We had two additional friends who wanted to join us and the owner was more than happy to accommodate the extra tent and two people! The toilet blocks were very clean and tidy, whilst well stocked with toilet roll. There’s a washing up area so you don’t need to worry about having to take disposable plates/cutlery. And if you were looking to take children, there’s a couple of little play areas and the owner spent half the day driving the kids round on the back of his Land Rover!

Site is very clean and lots of space to pitch without being too close to neighbours. We were welcomed by a very friendly chap, assume he was the owner. Facilities were clean and good showers. This site is a bit of a drive from other villages / towns like Settle etc but ideal if you just want to get away. Our Niece loved the park and there were lots of kids playing and enjoying themselves. Quiet curfew seemed to be obeyed well on the two nights we stayed so no issues there.

    Disliked:

We had our 10 month old pup with us who was kept on a lead at all times but there were several other dogs not kept on theirs. There were a couple of occasions where another dog ran up to ours and although no harm was done, i think the dogs on leads rule should be strictly enforced. One dog, unsure whose it was as the owner was nowhere in sight, came and did its business near our tent, so that just got left there! So, dog owners should respect the rules on site but i think this is one the owners could remind people of on arrival....Its not fair to other dogs kept on leads or even adults and kids who dont like dogs and dont want them running up to them.

Local attractions

Itching to get out for some outdoor pursuits? Put your tackle to the test at Stocks Reservoir (10 minutes' drive), a nearby angling spot where you can catch both brown and rainbow trout. (If all this fly fishing malarky is new to you, you can also book a crash course in the basics before getting started.) The local riding stable (10 minutes) is another popular pick if you fancy a spell in the saddle.

Up for roaming the hills of the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley by rail? Pull up in Settle (20 minutes) and get yourself aboard the Settle to Carlisle railway, a solidly scenic 73-mile line with highlights like the Ribblehead Viaduct and Dent station, the highest in all of England. Steam services are also occasionally laid on for those looking to make the four-hour round trip in style.

Other visit-worthy Yorkshire haunts include Skipton (30 minutes), home to a well-preserved castle and narrowboat tours, Bolton Abbey (40 minutes) and the Dales village of Malham (30 minutes), the starting point for hardy hill walkers heading out to Malham Cove and Malham Tarn.
