  • No-frills camping at Daisy Nook Country Park near Oldham, Lancashire
  • Five minutes’ drive to golf and riding; 20 minutes into Manchester
  • Off-grid site; fishing and café in the park; shops 10 minutes’ drive
Wild camping within easy reach of some towny-type action appeal? Daisy Nook Camping’s no-frills grass pitches combine wondrous views of Lancashire hills near Oldham with a 20-minute drive into the centre of Manchester, should you wish for a couple of nights out on the razz but a peaceful place to lay your head. And another excellent reason for staying here? The five-acre camping field overlooks Crime Lake, as featured in a painting by L.S. Lowry from 1942. Today you can fish in these hallowed waters direct from the site (you’ll need to buy a day ticket), as well as enjoy walks in Daisy Nook Country Park. Further afield, scenic walks or cycle rides up Hartshead Pike (15 minutes’ drive) are rewarded with panoramic views, while you can also explore the countryside on horseback. If you’ve got horse-mad kids with you, you’ll be pleased to know there are several horses around and about near the pitches. Basic amenities on site stretch to composting toilets and chemical disposal, but anything else you need will have to come with you from home (don’t forget a torch for wandering about after dark). Barbecues are permitted on the field, so stock up on goodies in Ashton-under-Lyne (10 minutes) supermarkets, although there’s a jolly good café in the country park if you’re not into bothering with cooking. Alternative therapies are also available here, including gong sound healing, reiki, auricular acupuncture and breathwalk. Please ask the site team directly for information and booking.
