With a dramatic landscape of blanket bogs, heather-covered hills and woodland, the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty makes a fine spot for a hiking holiday. And if you don’t mind roughing it a little, Burn House Campsite makes a top base from which to start your exploration. Close to the Lancashire village of Newton-In-Bowland (five minutes’ drive or a 40-minute walk through the fields), this peaceful, remote site on a working farm puts you right in the middle of this AONB, so you can wake up to spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. And if you keep your eyes peeled, you might spot assorted birds, including curlews and hen harriers. You will need a smidgen of pioneering spirit, though: there are no toilets on site, which doesn’t have any hot water either (nor any drinkable water, so come prepared). The owners encourage a leave-no-trace policy, so be sure to put your earth-friendly hat on and use the recycling points available. Barbecues are allowed on site, and anglers might like to catch their dinner at Stocks Reservoir (20 minutes; permits required); if you don’t know your way around a fishing rod, there are shops and supermarkets in Clitheroe (20 minutes), not to mention several cafés and restaurants. For a relaxed lunch over a pint or two of real ale, the nearest pubs are in Newton-In-Bowland or Slaidburn (five minutes’ drive, or about an hour on foot).

Liked Amazing views, peace and quiet, about as 'off grid' as we could imagine! Will be even more lovely when the trees have grown (as long as they don't block the view too much 😉).

Disliked Narrow steep track to pitch, and uneven stones. We worried that we wouldn't have got up there if it had been wet weather. Would recommend this site as long as people are really aware of the access, or use the grass site which looked great.

And you didn’t actually have any children with you .

Liked Fun wild camping experience in beautiful Bowland. Parked up with the tentbox and enjoyed a glorious sunset with my young children. Susan and her husband came to meet us on arrive and were incredibly welcoming. We will be back!

Liked The perfect place to switch off from the hustle and bustle, digitally detox and relax. The owners are really friendly and helpful. The views were absolutely stunning. By far the most beautiful location we’ve stayed at. This was our first time wild camping and we absolutely loved it. We will be back.

Liked When we got to the site, we were overwhelmed with the amount of help we received! The weather didn’t hold up for us but we reccomend this site for anyone interested in visiting the Ribble valley ❤️

Local attractions

Wild boars are just some of the residents at Bowland Wild Boar Park (20 minutes’ drive). This wildlife park is also home to deer, ostriches and meerkat, plus farmyard animals like pigs, sheep and ducks. In addition to handling and feeding sessions, there are regular events – from falconry displays to soap bubble extravaganzas, plus tractor rides. Settle (half an hour) is the gateway to Yorkshire Dales National Park. Trails starting on the outskirts of the town lead to rocky caverns like Victoria Cave and the spectacular Scaleber Force Waterfall. Or you can drive a little further to check out the vast limestone amphitheatre at Malham Cove (50 minutes). Among the highlights in Lancaster (45 minutes) are a well-preserved medieval castle, a 19th-century neo-Gothic cathedral and the Lancaster Maritime Museum, on the banks of the River Lune. From here, it’s a 15-minute drive to the sandy beach at Morecambe Bay.
