  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away
Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy. This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass. Both make an excellent choice if you've already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. If you'd rather head out, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The site was lovely and quiet and the location was perfect by the beck.

Shirley and her husband were so helpful both before and during our visit - they were also really friendly.

The facilities were nice and clean and were regularly checked over. Flushing toilets and showers and washing up facilities - all you need really.

It was a great base to explore the lakes too as well as Kirby Lonsdale nearby. Fab ice cream shop and brewery there!

Disliked: Only a minor niggle and I worked around it with a towel on the back of the door, but you could see into the showers from the outside which I didn’t love. I think a little adjustment to the doors to cover the gaps and it would be perfect.

By the Beck unpowered grass tent site (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Great stay, the campsite is lovely. Beautiful views. The shallow stream was a hit with my 2 kids they spent lots of time there playing. Our pitch was by the stream with private facilities (gas shower and compost toilet which was surprisingly fine once you get used to it!) there are flushing toilets too which you can use. There is lots of space, pitches are big and not crammed in, hired a fire pit which included a huge bag of wood.

owner was very helpful and brought our equipment down to the field, the hill down to pitches is quite steep from the car park.

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: The site is in a relitivley remote but beautiful location. Facilities are fantastic and clean. Warm showers are always a bonus! Wadhing up facilities were great with provided sponges and cleaning products. My son enjoyed playing in the stream at the bottom of the site where we found a trout! We had one of the fire pits and logs (£10) which was ample for the evening. Shirley was very accomodating. She gave us a lift once we had packed up to the car park at the top of the hill. Really enjoyed our stay here and would definitley stay again!

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: As a family we love camping here. The campsite is always clean and very well maintained. Shirley is an amazing host, she is friendly and great at communicating with us. The kids always look forward to coming here and don't want to camp anywhere else. They always say 'we're home' when we arrive. The campsite has flushing toilets and showers. The views are spectacular, especially late at night when the cloud clears up, you can see the edge of the milky way.

Route directions

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
