  • Wildlife haven on a family-run farm site in the Cumbria countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; pub 20 minutes' walk away
Join the ranks of the farm animals at Puddlemire… and make your way to your chosen plot by gator or quad bike. Here, you'll join a friendly, family-run site in the Cumbria countryside, resting between lakes and dales and bordered by a trickling beck. A 20-minute drive from Yorkshire Dales National Park and Lake District, this is a wildlife haven 10 minutes' drive from Kirkby Lonsdale and well situated for walking or cycling your way around literary villages and hilly crags, or past ribbon lakes and hay meadows… whichever takes your fancy. This is a simple site with warm showers and flushing toilets. Campfires and barbecues are allowed on site, as long as they’re kept off the grass. Both make an excellent choice if you've already stocked up on supplies from a couple of shops within a 10-minute drive or organic goods from the farm shop within 15 minutes’ drive. If you'd rather head out, there are also several pubs within 15 minutes' drive, where you can either nurse a pint or fuel up for the next day's activities.

By the Beck unpowered grass tent site (private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Lovely quiet site, excellent location between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales and close to the motorway. Extremely peaceful location by the river, great clean facilities and friendly helpful owners. Exactly what I look for in a site - everything you need and nothing you don’t, so not crowded or remotely noisy! The site is in walking distance of a great pub which is a bonus. Would definitely visit again!

Liked: We had an amazing stay at this campsite!! The owners were lovely, welcoming, and helpful and we appreciated all the effort that was made to make us feel at home. The facilities were clean and perfect, we enjoyed the warm showers and the recycling area was well organised and taken care of. The pitch was spacious and beautiful, with a lovely river that we got to paddle in. Thankyou for having us we will definitely be back again!

Hobby Wood unpowered grass tent site (no private bathroom amenities)

Liked: Great campsite in the beautiful nature spot, in the valley and next to a river. Facilities were clean and in really good condition, renting out a fire pit with all the wood and firefighters was a great addition for the cool evenings and served well for drying boots. The owner of the campsite was really helpful and friendly, transported all of our heavy gear down the hill and gave us a ride too. Due to no cars on the campsite I felt relaxed as I didn’t need to worry about my 2 year old running in front of the car. It was only a short drive from Kirkby Lonsdale which was nice to explore. Really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

Liked: My friend and I stayed for a weekend with our girls and what a fabulous time we had. The campsite is beautiful, the girls enjoyed the river running through and paddling in there, the hammocks, the sheep and the cows. Shirley was incredibly helpful bringing our things down to the tent and then back up again. The toilets and showers were very clean and equipped with everything you need. The location was great for getting to Windermere. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Liked: Such a beautiful site, peaceful, well kept and very inviting. We stayed as a group this year after vising previously and falling in love with the site. Far enough away from anything to encourage outdoors and socialising but close enough to shops etc if you need anything. The owners of this site are extremely accommodating and will check to make sure your happy

Disliked: Nothing at all

Route directions

Exit the M6 at Junction 36, taking the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale. You will go past the Plough Hotel on your right. Take the next turn on your right-hand side (just past a layby, with a white bungalow on the corner and a signpost for Hutton Roof). Follow this road, and when it bears sharply to the left, do not turn left but carry straight on in front of the row of houses. Follow the road until you reach a T-junction and then turn right. Keep bearing right, passing Rose Cottage; the site is at the next right-hand turn.

Local attractions

Where to go first? If you want to test your aim, clay pigeon shooting could become your next hobby at Crabtree Clay Shoot (five minutes' drive; check ahead for opening days) or climb the local limestone-paved paths at Hutton Roof Crags (10 minutes’ drive). For countryside enthusiasts, the Lake District (20 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (20 minutes) national parks each have their own draws. In the Lake District, the fells and lakes offer ample opportunities for sailing, rock climbing, or cycling. Meanwhile, in the Yorkshire Dales, you can track down waterfalls and old barns. Northwards, more walking and cycling trails await at Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (25 minutes), this time through ancient woodlands and limestone. While you’re there, visit Sizergh Castle (15 minutes) and stroll the stately grounds and estate. If you’re longing for a sandy beach, there are long stretches of sand at Silverdale (30 minutes) and Sandside (20 minutes). Head further south and you’ll come to Morecambe (30 minutes), where another bay competes with a 12th-century castle, prison and a stroll-worthy promenade for your attention.
