  • Waterside Cumbrian retreat in the rural Eden Valley
  • Three miles from Kirkoswald; 30 minutes' drive to the Lake District
  • All pitches come with a firepit and picnic bench; coarse fishing lake
Established in 2021, High Hall Campsite gives you the opportunity to come and experience everything that makes Cumbria tick. Tucked away under the hills of the North Pennine fells and set deep in the gorgeous Eden Valley, this modern site is an excellent place to arrange a relaxed rural retreat. The grounds here are divided by Croglin Beck, a scenic stream that meanders its way through the middle of the site. There are plenty of waterside views around and the wildlife is abundant: red squirrels, roe deer, barn owls and kingfishers could be among the creatures you spot. There are also farm animals to admire and a well-stocked coarse fishing lake that guests can use free of charge. (Please note that a catch-and-return fishing policy is in place.) This Cumbrian campsite is fairly remote, but it's easy to drop by in Kirkoswald (three miles from base), an Eden Valley village with a hotel, pub, convenience store and ruined castle. High Hall Campsite is located on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding National Beauty. This secluded site would also make a good base for day trips to the Lake District, as the national park is approximately 30 minutes away by road.

Unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Well spaced pitches. Friendly owner. Good kitchen and washing up facilities. Great showers. No dogs, so there was no dog poo for the kids to step in. Each pitch had a picnic table which really helped.

Disliked: House Martins nesting in the old cow shed (ie. kitchen and showers) were wonderful to see but their droppings were not.

Liked: The stream and pond, the ice cream (as good as other reviews suggested)!, the views, the proprietor, the laid back vibe, and really pleasant pitch. And the resident dog!

Disliked: Some of the guests did not treat the venue with as much respect as deserved. Not the campsite's fault.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Very large electric tent pitches that are quite spaced out so lots of privacy. Every pitch has a picnic bench and a firepit, buckets of kindling are sold on site. Great washing facilities both at the pitches and at the old cow shed, a few mins walk up the hill. If you run out of milk or snacks, or just need a match, there is an honesty shop in the old cow shed. There is WIFI at the old cow shed but still had some very good data/roaming signal at the pitches. A perfect location inbetween the lake district and north pennines. We will be returning next year.

Disliked: The weather, but nevermind.

Liked: Amazing site. Clean. Beautiful scenery. Great amenities on site including clean showers, toilets and nice communal barn with food. Lovely staff who couldn’t do enough for us. Had a lovely pitch next to the water. Would definitely come back and can see why this is such a highly rated place. 10/10 perfect.

Liked: Very picturesque, clean and tidy site with good amenities. Having the picnic benches and campfire with the pitch was an added and welcome bonus. The showers in the top barn are fantastic! We didn’t try the ones on the lower pitch so can’t comment. It is clearly a loved family run site along side the farm, the family are extremely welcoming, helpful and friendly. We will most definitely visit again.

Local attractions

There's a lot to see and do in the local area without venturing far: Kirkoswald Castle (10 minutes' drive) is well worth a visit, as are Lacy's Caves (15 minutes), a series of five sandstone chambers carved out by an eccentric 18th-century landowner. On a slightly grander scale, there are also ancient sites like Hadrian's Wall (20 minutes) and Birdoswald Roman Fort (35 minutes). If you're Lakeland bound, start off in Pooley Bridge (30 minutes), a pretty little waterside town where you can catch the Ullswater steamer service to gorgeous Glenridding at the other end of the lake. The market town of Keswick (45 minutes) on the shores of Derwentwater is easily accessible too – head here for boat hire, to browse an array of independent shops or to visit the Derwent Pencil Museum and learn about the local graphite industry. If you want to cover varied terrain, you're in the right place: this site is three miles down the road from the Coast to Coast cycle route (join at the bottom of Hartside Pass), and if you fancy dipping dipping your toe in the Yorkshire Dales it's easy to hop on the Settle to Carlisle railway 10 minutes down the road at Lazonby.
