Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: The campsite was beautiful and ideal for children. Loved the two play areas and the football field. The showers were powerful, which was a nice surprise. We used the washing up facilities and communal fridge.

Unpowered concrete and grass caravan site

Liked: The laser tag was great and the kids park was awesome, nice to keep the football area separate from the tent pitches. Kate was also lovely and helpful, very accommodating and helped to move us when we were put in a pitch between two noisy groups who were together but had been separated! Odd decisions to put us there to be honest.

Disliked: The lack of a duty manager at nights. They rely on the bar staff to do the evening walk around to check the site is quiet at 11pm. One lad was pretty shy hence why we had noisy neighbours until gone 12:30 as he clearly didn’t want to approach a bunch of drunk folks, can’t blame him. We text the emergency contact number and we’re ultimately told to try sort it out ourselves. Whilst we had two young children with us! Hence the need for a on site duty manager is a must. Facilities on the whole need some love, showers a bit shabby, although they were hot.

Unpowered grass tent site (two person)

Liked: Fab showers and toilet block, all of which were clean. Plenty of space and great facilities for kids. Site was kept tidy and noise was minimal. Ice cream van turned up both nights we were there!

Disliked: We advised we would be arriving at 7pm at the time of booking, but received an email at 4pm saying the office was closing and detailing where our pitch would be. We didn't see this as we were travelling and preserving our phone battery. No one answered the telephone numbers the several times we called, despite specific instructions to call if arriving after 4pm.

Local attractions

As well as the hiking trails of the Lake District National Park, active options nearby include Bassenthwaite Lakes, 20 minutes’ drive from base, where there are lakeside paths, boat hire and tours and tastings at Lakes Distillery. Derwentwater, half an hour away, has kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing; you could also get out on the water on an Ullswater Steamer at Pooley Bridge (access 40 minutes' drive away at Penrith), cruising by some of the area's highest peaks. Historical highlights are plentiful in the region too: Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens are both within half an hour, Gretna Green is 40 minutes away and the remains of the great Hadrian’s Wall are reachable in about an hour. Try something a little different at the Rheged Discovery Centre, 40 minutes away, where there are cafés, craft shops and a six-storey cinema screen, all in the UK’s largest grass-covered building.
