  • Well-kept pitches on a family farm 20 minutes’ drive from Ullswater
  • Lowther Castle and Aira Force High Waterfall both 20 minutes’ drive
  • Bike hire available on site; pubs and takeaways 10 minutes’ drive
With easy access from both the West Coast Main Line to Penrith and the M6 motorway, Woodhead Farm is small and family-run working farm in the Eden Valley. Sitting on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the site is 20 minutes’ drive from Ullswater. It makes a handy base for excursions into the North Pennines National Landscape (also 20 minutes by car) too. Once you arrive at Woodhead Farm, you can make friends with whatever young animals are around (including lambs in spring), and because there is always livestock around, dogs are not allowed on site. However, lots of great cycling and walking trails can be accessed directly from the camping field – and if you’re going down the biking route, the owners have an agreement with a local rental company who can deliver bikes right to your pitch. Golfers can also have a field day as there are several 18-hole courses within 20 minutes’ drive. Barbecues are allowed on site but if you’re not that into alfresco cooking, you can head for the pubs and takeaways of Penrith (10 minutes’ drive). If you want to push the boat out for a special occasion, there’s a Michelin-starred place in Skelton (also 10 minutes, reservations required).

What customers say

Lovely, quiet farm site, handy for the M6/Penrith & Lake District. Spacious, tidy pitches, clean loos. Owners generally praised, but some noted construction & a vehicle incident causing friction.

Rosie's Retreat shepherd's hut

Liked Our stay at the Rosies retreat shepherd's hut was truly delightful. The cabin provided everything one could possibly require. We were well-equipped with cooking facilities and enjoyed a barbecue. The inclusion of our own WiFi and a Firestick for television was a welcome convenience. The spacious fridge freezer was great for all our food. The bathroom amenities, such as shower gel, shampoo, and lotion, were thoughtfully provided. Both the cabin and its surroundings were impeccably maintained.

It was just a ten-minute drive to Penrith, which was a cute town. There were tons of shops and cafes, and everyone was super friendly.

The owners, a lovely couple, extended a warm welcome. Despite our early arrival, two hours before the scheduled check-in time of 4 o'clock, they graciously accommodated us immediately, for which we were deeply appreciative.
We certainly plan to return😊.

Disliked Nothing.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site (large)

Liked Friendliness of host. Rang at 6pm as the camp site we were staying at was too rowdy for my little boy, so I called and asked if they had space. Welcomed with open arms, given a pick of pitches etc. toilet/shower facilitities nice and clean. New block is nearly finished.

Fully-serviced grass and gravel caravan site (large)

Liked Nothing.

Disliked Very rude.

Lots of diggers building a shower block in the day. Entirely inappropriate to allow kids there now.

Came by and joined my partner at night in a van as we were working nearby. We didn't see any stipulations saying we couldn't have a second vehicle (which was a big van) which was the only reason we booked this place.

Extremely rude owner came up and tried to insinuate I parked badly (which I hadn't). Then proceeded to patronise me about how hard I'd find it to reverse in the morning (would be have said this if I was a man?)... So made my reverse it in the dark instead. Left a rather sour taste in our mouths.

A site for those without a soul. Paid for 5 night and stayed for one. Would not recommend or return;

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I hope this will help with some of your concerns.
Late that evening I noticed a very large set of lights coming up our farm lane which made me go out & check as we weren’t expecting any more arrivals that evening. Your partner had previously told us you were selling burgers at the Kendal calling festival & would be joining him later.
When you booked a motorhome on line there was no mention of another vehicle but we were happy to accommodate either a car or dropped off by taxi. If at any stage at booking or your partner had said it was a very large commercial van & arriving back in the dark & leaving before 7am, I would have asked if you would park in a area that would least disturb the other guests.
We had one mini digger in for the afternoon just finishing the final ground detailing work around our new toilet block which will be ready to open next weekend. We appreciate it was not ideal but most guests were away for the afternoon & your partner & two children looked to be having a good time on the play area.
