  • Peaceful site in Cumbria with views over the North Pennines
  • A 10-minute drive from Penrith or Ullswater; 20 minutes from Keswick
  • Next to a shop selling dairy produce and five minutes' walk to a pub
While Cumbria's Eden Valley isn't quite heaven on earth, it comes pretty close (especially if you're a fan of the Lakes and the Pennines). About 10 minutes' drive from the shores of Ullswater and 20 from Derwentwater, Shepherd's Hut Cumbria near Penrith is a fab base for all manner of outdoorsy explores, with hiking, canoeing and kayaking all on the cards. This site is on the C2C bike route, too, making it a smashing stopover for those touring these parts on two wheels. Shepherd's Hut Cumbria backs onto a disused train line (good news for visitors looking to get a good night's sleep), and there's plenty of outdoor space for guests and their gear, including a private lawn, firepit, picnic table and bike storage space. Anne and Mark also leave a basket containing oodles of info about the local area to help newcomers get their bearings.  Guests looking to stock up on local produce can head to the farm shop next door for eggs, spuds, cheeses and unpasteurised milk (if that's your thing). For a bigger shop, head into Penrith (10 minutes' drive) for supermarkets; there are also gourmet options here, including a food hall serving local, seasonal produce. Stays at Shepherd's Hut Cumbria are well set up for indoor and outdoor self-catering, but if you want the cooking to be taken care of, take a five-minute stroll for a meal at the nearest pub.

Local attractions

This site is well located for day trippers: the speedy M6 is three miles away, making it a breeze to zoom around the surrounding countryside. Close to Junction 40 at Penrith is the Rheged Centre (five minutes' drive), a distinctive grass-roofed building with soft play, art exhibits, cafés and souvenir shops. Just on the other side of Penrith, Brougham Castle (10 minutes) has medieval heritage in a riverside setting (it's also a top spot for picnics).  Guests heading for the Lakes can hire kayaks and canoes in Pooley Bridge (10 minutes) for self-powered paddles on Ullswater or head to Keswick (20 minutes) for vistas over equally scenic Derwentwater. Trips to the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can also be sorted: the trail that runs from Ashgill Force waterfall (45 minutes) is particularly pleasing. The tracks at Shepherd's Hut Cumbria may have fallen silent long ago, but visiting train fans shouldn't be too disheartened – the nearby Eden Valley heritage line (25 minutes) has plenty of retro locos (on some days it's even possible to have a go in the driver's cab).
