  • Peaceful Cumbria campsite near the banks of the River Eden
  • Surrounded by woodland and fields with a backdrop of the Pennine Fells
  • Adjacent to a nearby playground area, park and bookable swimming pool
It's in a heavenly location near the banks of the River Eden, surrounded by woodland and fields, with the Pennine Fells as its wild backdrop โ€“ and Lazonby Campsite is next to the local Lazonby Swimming Pool for easy access to dips as long as you book them in advance online. The river's right there if you want to fish (get a permit at Kirkoswald community shop or at the pool kiosk) and the northern Lakes are 15 miles away. Lazonby is on the edge of Lazonby village (about eight miles from Penrith), which has a pub, a well-stocked supermarket (open daily with post office and ATM), two churches and a petrol garage. A repair garage, two more pubs and another play park are about a mile away in the neighbouring village of Kirkoswald. Toilets and solar-powered showers are in the swimming pool buildings about 200 metres from the campsite (the path is lit at night but you might want to bring a torch too), and there are washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal unit along the lane to the side of the pool. The pool is open daily (and subject to an entry fee) from the early May bank holiday until mid-September and is heated to 24ยบC; lifeguards are on duty at all times. It also has a kiosk/cafรฉ selling hot and cold drinks, snacks, sweets and ice creams during pool opening times.

Liked: Fantastic small site with amenities required for camping. Very pleasant location. Pool was great fun for kids and ran by much appreciated locals. Short walk to local shops and some tasty pastries. Theres a park for kids and you are right next to the river.

Disliked: Not a biggie the pitches were not marked out and some campers struggled but we got it sorted

Liked: Small campsite with respectful surroundings Pub nearby that sold great food Park was great for the kids and could see them playing from the campsite

Disliked: Only one shower for the public pool and for campers, not cleaned regularly. Half of the pitch was extremely water logged and my car got stuck.

Liked: A lovely small site adjacent to a river walk and playground. Furthermore, the heated swimming pool was great, even in the rain! The volunteers are brilliant. This is a wonderful site with great support.

Disliked: During heavy rain areas of the site become very boggy.

Liked: Small field with EHU Decent playground next to the field. Down a track so not next to main road. Hot washing up Hot showers Not far from Ullswater/Aira force Decent walks

Disliked: Paying extra for the pool use So many midges - but it is next to a river Boggy in places, should have some dedicated hard standing pitches for tourers Ant infestation Whilst it was a nice stay with friends and their kids, I wouldn't be that bothered to stay here again as I think for the price there are nicer places with more facilities.

Liked: It was a small quiet campsite wirh not alot to do around. So if you're happy to sit and relax and go for walks its the perfect place. There's a large park there and a pool that you can book at a small cost. Showers and toilets were clean bur slightly dated. If you have little ones there is on the park and pool around so you'd need to drive to take them somewhere as there a shop and a pub that is open most of the week.

Disliked: The campsite emailed the morning we were due to arrive telling us we needed to print a sheet with our name and registration to place in our tent/car. Now I've no problem with this however not alot of people have access to printers including myself so we had to go to the library to print it off. I think more notice would be helpful to give time to get it printed.

Liked: The pitches were spacious, the electric and water were very accessible. The park and playing field were great for my son. We swam in the river and even caught some tiny fish. The local outdoor pool was great to cool down in on a hot sunny day and the volunteers in there do an amazing job!

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Lazonby is one of the stations on the very highly scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway line, a fave of famed travel scribe Bill Bryson and a must when in this part of the land. If you only have time for one journey on it, make it south to Settle rather than north to Carlisle, to pass over the mighty Ribblehead Viaduct; have the smartphones at the ready to snap a pic. The local area is rammed with riverside and woodland walks, with loads more to be had in the Lake District 15 miles away, and is popular with cyclists as it's about four miles from the C2C/Sea to Sea cycle route. Plenty of quiet country roads abound with views over the River Eden and surrounding area and to the Pennines if you're getting about by car. Penrith is eight miles from Lazonby Campsite and has lots of shops, supermarkets and services; travel there also for Penrith Castle, a climbing wall, cracking views across the Eden Valley from Beacon Hill and, happily, yet more Cumbrian pubs. And might you fancy a pub meal local to Lazonby? The Crown Inn, the Fetherston Arms and the Highland Drove are all recommended inns with food in the nearby villages of Kirkoswald and Great Salkeld.
