Views around the site

  • Lake District wild camping site 10 minutes’ drive from Kendal
  • Windermere 15 minutes’ drive; Scafell Pike 50 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; resident sheep and cows; five minutes’ walk from a pub
It’s not quite ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ at Peacock Farm Camping, but it’s worth noting that this family-friendly site is open to the public only for 60 precious days a year, so it pays to time your holiday just right… This is a pop-up site on a working farm on the south-eastern fringes of Lake District National Park, where profits from the wild camping go to Dreamflight, a UK charity that supports children with a serious illness or disability to go on a dream holiday. Almost halfway between Kendal (10 minutes’ drive) and Windermere (15 minutes), it has a pretty privileged location for exploring this spectacular corner of England, with views of distant wooded hills and fields surrounded by moss-covered stone walls. Amenities are on the simple side at Peacock Farm, but there are portable toilets for guests. In addition, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or a campfire when it’s time for dinner. Need provisions? The nearest shop is just across the A591 (five minutes), or you can head into Kendal or Staveley (10 minutes). And if you fancy a pub meal (steak, fish and chips, curry…), you have to walk only about five minutes down the lane. There are dog-friendly walks in the vicinity, but while on the farm, please keep your canine buddy on a lead so as not to spook the resident animals, which include sheep and cows. There is also plenty of wildlife to be seen on your hikes – from red squirrels to nesting ospreys at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (15 minutes), where the peaty ponds also attract dragonflies and damselflies.

What customers say

A peaceful, back-to-basics spot with great views & friendly farmies. Clean portaloos, but watch out for the rocky track, limited water/bins. Great for exploring the Lakes, but maybe not for total newbies. Good value, folks are keen to head back.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Everything......what a great little spot.

Easy to find, easy to park, and plenty of space to pitch a tent.

Fantastic views and very peaceful.

There were quite a few people there....as to be expected on a bank holiday weekend, but it didn't feel crowded or noisy.

I went to this area as I wanted to scatter my late mothers ashes on the hills overlooking Windermere (she loved it there) and this was the perfect base to do just that. I was up in the fells on foot quite quickly as the site is only a few miles from the lake. Camp fires are allowed, so once I'd returned from my hike, I lit up a fire pit and watched the sun go down with a cold beverage and a hassle free evening. Slept like a log with no disturbances both nights I was there.

The local village is easy to find and easy to get to. It has a small Spar shop and a great pub with great food and friendly staff.

I will defo be back next year, and for longer, so that I can explore the area under happier circumstances.

Unpowered grass campervan, tent or trailer tent site

Liked Everything, the views were amazing! Such a lovely quiet campsite, on arrival you choose your own pitch, you just drive in and start pitching up. Garage 5 minute drive away incase you need anything you have forgotten. The fact that this earnings from this campsite go to charity make the whole experience even better. Obviously no WiFi but signal was fine
Would highly recommend visiting! ☺️

Disliked We stayed Friday-Sunday in the heat so by Sunday the portaloo toilets weren’t the best. Were manageable though.

From the manager: Hi thank you so much. The toilet company turned up 1 day late which was out of our hands but for next year we will have loads more amenities. Thank you so much

Liked ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We really enjoyed our stay at Peacock Farm Wild Camping. The place is quiet and peaceful, surrounded by beautiful mountains and lovely views – perfect if you want to escape from home and everyday noise.

The toilets were not super good, but we knew from the booking that they are portable, so it was expected. It’s more like true wild camping, with a simple setup, which makes it feel very relaxing and natural.

Great spot to relax, recharge, and enjoy nature. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for a peaceful break. 🌿⛺️
