  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Valley View unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Great facilities. Toilets and showers were super nice and the shop was so lovely and well stocked! Views were also gorgeous and the location was great for us (hikers!). Was also super convenient that we were able to check-in early!

Disliked: Some horrible children staying on site... but you get that everywhere unfortunately!!

Valley View unpowered grass tent or campervan site

Liked: Tranquility and beautiful setting of the site. Spacious pitches. Well stocked shop with warm croissants in the morning.

Friendly welcome on arrival.

Disliked: The shower block looks and felt s bit like work in progress and the on/off showers are a bit annoying albeit there seemed to be enough hot water for a shower.

Unpowered grass tent site (small)

Liked: Beautiful small campsite in the south of the Lake District with cute camp spots, very kind staff, useful small reception shop, warm and cold water, good WiFi. Overall great and peaceful.

Disliked: The showers work with sensors which stop very often, so showering wasn’t very pleasant.

Powered gravel campervan site

Liked: Location - 15mins drive to Windermere and Kendal, facilities were generally great, relaxed atmosphere, child and dog friendly, fresh croissants in the morning.

Disliked: Nearest pub is ~2miles away. Can hear hand driers - toilets could do with self closing doors. Hot water for showers struggled to keep up with demand

Powered grass tent or campervan site (large)

Liked: Great little campsite, which I would describe as camping as it used to be but with much better facilities. Escape from the mobile phone, internet, tv signal. There is site Wi-Fi but a bit hit and miss for us.
Clean toilet and shower block, just a little chilly in late April, but hey we are camping! Lovely well stocked shop for those forgotten essentials. We missed out on pizza night, but good idea, as is the undercover picnic table and table football. The pub mentioned is a 45 minutes walk up hill and down, so not handy for us. (10 minute drive for good food and beer, zero options available.)

Disliked: Not exactly a dislike, but be aware that it is a narrow road to the site, so if you're in a van you may need to reverse to find the passing place.
Although nice & quiet when we were there, the site was full the weekend before (Easter) and I can imagine could feel fairly cramped.
I can see why no movement after 8pm, but as we wanted to use the pub and were in a campervan if felt a bit odd having to make arrangement beforehand.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
