  • A 25-minute drive from Wast Water and 30 minutes from beaches
  • Ensuite lodges with private decks and heating; communal firepits
For cosy nights and active days (or lazy ones, if that's your bag) in stunningly scenic surrounds, make tracks for Woolpack Farm, a family-friendly glampsite in Cumbria’s Eskdale Valley. Deep in the Lake District National Park, the site is well placed for rural rambles, brilliant bike rides and all sorts of explores… It’s less than five minutes’ pedal to the Eskdale Cycle Trail, which riders can follow along the river Esk as far as Ravenglass, and 25 minutes’ drive to the UK’s deepest lake, Wast Water, for canoeing, kayaking and windsurfing. For hikes and climbs, point tyres towards Wasdale Head (35 minutes), the starting point for the Three Peaks challenge and home to the Biggest Liar competition. (Honest.) It’s a cinch to stay active closer to home base too. A quick stroll will bring guests to West Lakes Adventure, part of the Woolpack Farm complex, to sort days of canyoning, canoeing, archery, climbing, paddleboarding and mountain biking. For more leisurely days, grab clubs and head out on the links at Eskdale Golf Course (20 minutes) or Seascale (30 minutes). Recharge back on site after busy days by sorting eats on a camping stove brought from home, a gas griddle hired on site, or a barbecue in the dedicated area, then unwinding on private decks or curled up next to the lodges’ woodburning stoves. Fancy a night off from cooking? It’s just a few metres’ walk from site to pub grub at the Woolpack Inn. If you're in the mood to mingle with fellow glampers, you'll often find companions by the communal firepit.

Kepple microlodge

Liked: Location

Disliked: No privacy at all these “lodges” are as soon as you drive in off the main road so all you can hear is cars scraping in on the stones all night if you sit out your right next to someone or someone’s looking at you walking past don’t book if your looking for a private or peaceful trip as you can hear every single noise from each wall,

Kepple microlodge

Liked: Accommodation was very clean. Had everything there that you needed, no need to take things like washing up liquid, hand wash, etc. The undercover outside area was great, could keep things outside without getting wet. The dryer rack was a handy addition too. Lots of lovely walks from your door. We would definitely recommend to others and are hoping to head back later in the year.

Local attractions

Stays that appeal to both kids and grownups are a simple matter hereabouts: it’s 20 minutes’ drive to Muncaster Castle, where visitors can take tours, explore magic-filled fairy trails, get lost in the maze or marvel at hawk displays. Beach days aren’t far from reach either, as it’s less than an hour from the site to Seascale, where a sandy stretch lines the coast and sea swims are encouraged. If castle wanders whet appetites for all things historical, venture as far as Ravenglass (about 25 minutes away) to clamber aboard the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway for round-trip journeys to Dalegarth for Boot, then travel along the coast as far as Whitehaven (45 minutes) to visit the Rum Story museum (and, yes, sample the goods). Further afield, get a taste of literary history at the Beatrix Potter Gallery or at Dove Cottage and Wordsworth Museum, both within an hour of the site. Prefer some explores under someone else’s steam? It’s a little less than an hour to the National Trust’s Steam Yacht Gondola for trips along Coniston Water in the Victorian steam-powered yacht.
