  • Quiet, family-friendly site on the edge of the North Pennines
  • A short walk to Murton Fell; 30 minutes’ drive to the Lake District
  • Fresh eggs available on site; 15 minutes' drive from a pub and café
Peace and quiet, chickens and ducks and the North Pennines… that’s the way of The Old Chapel, only a few miles’ walk from Murton Fell on the edge of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In this quiet part of the countryside, good scenery isn’t on the short side and the North Pennines isn’t the only splendid landscape… the Lake District National Park is half an hour’s drive away too. All the family are welcome on this farm, and it's been kitted out with useful amenities including portable toilets, a hand-washing point and a standpipe with clean tap water. Turkeys, chickens and ducks potter around this place too, meaning that there are plenty of fresh eggs (good news for those of you who fancy a cooked breakfast…). Where to source those other bits and bobs for the barbecue or snacks to sweeten up your next hike? The site is in a little village known for its peaceful setting and it's 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Appleby-in-Westmorland and 15 minutes from Dufton, where there’s a café and pub that dishes out homecooked food. When you're ready to take on Murton Fell, the hill is just 10 minutes’ walk away from the site, so you’ll have a good walk handily within reach.

What customers say

Peaceful, no-frills spot for bushwalkers. Ted's a ripper owner! Loved the quiet, scenery & good-sized sites. Toilets are basic, no showers, but overall a cracker of a stay. Most reckon they'll be back.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked A peaceful place with a lot to do nearby. The grass was freshly cut, with plenty of space to put your tent up.

The area is a bit inclined so you would need to adjust your sleeping position 😁

The owner was very nice and helpful.

You can rent a firepit and buy some wood for fire.

Disliked It’s not a very big deal for us but the toilet is one of those plastic cubicles… and during the hot day it’s not that pleasant (hot) but it was clean.

Just saying this for people who are not used to this kind of toilet.

Unpowered grass and earth tent site

Liked Had an absolutely wonderful time! Ted was a fantastic host, really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and took extra time to drive us round the local area to show some hiking spots and take us to the shop!

The campsite is simple but very peaceful and near some incredible hikes in the surrounding hills, would highly recommend for a short hiking break

Disliked Quite a long walk from the nearest station! Would definitely recommend getting a lift there

Local attractions

Nosy to know more about the North Pennines? Well, you’ll soon get to grips with all its waterfalls, hills and the like, as there are a fair few popular patches within driving distance of the site. When you’re after somewhere close by, there’s High Cup Nick (five minutes’ drive) for an eight-mile trek up into the hills. After that, deeper into the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, waterfalls come into play. There's Cauldron Snout (an hour and 10 minutes) below the Cow Green Reservoir and the powerful High Force Waterfall (55 minutes), where fishing and kayaking are in full flow on the river Tees and cycling and shooting on the surrounding land. While you’re up that way, Ashgill Force (an hour) is a quieter waterfall and Summerhill Force & Gibson's Cave (55 minutes) has a little alcove for visitors to peer out from behind the cascade. Then to turn back the clocks a little… Barnard Castle (half an hour), above the River Tees, is from the 12th century and the sensory garden and turrets are still intact for you to have a look around.
