General
- Small family-run site five minutes' drive from Menston and Otley
- Half an hour's drive from Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate
- Views over Wharfe Valley and a few minutes from the Yorkshire Dales
Town or country? No such pesky decisions to be made when staying at Clarion Lodge Campsite – its handy Menston location means your answer can be a laidback ‘both, ta’.
Settle at this small family-run site and you can say yes to many of Yorkshire’s finest offerings: Leeds, Bradford and Harrogate are all about a half-hour drive away for those times when you seek museums, restaurants, shops and nightlife, and the wide open spaces of the Yorkshire Dales are just a couple of miles away when you’ve got something rather more rural in mind.
Sneak previews of your rural surrounds are on offer on site, for this peaceful place has fab views out over the Wharfe Valley from its elevated location on the Chevin. Don’t be fooled by that rustic outlook, however; you’re not completely out in the countryside here. The little towns of Menston and Otley are both a mile away for train trips, riverside walks, supermarket supplies and takeaway curries; even more convenient is the kid- and dog-friendly 18th-century country inn a mere five minutes’ amble from the site.
This is a place that appreciates its peace and quiet, so there’s no large groups or music allowed. Ball games and barbecues are welcome but you’ll be asked to keep the hubbub down as night falls so that everyone can enjoy a bit of kip. Facilities are similarly low key: a tourist info point, a gents’ and ladies’ toilet block and a log cabin washing-up area keeping you clean and comfy.

Local attractions
All set for fresh air? You’re in the right place: the Chevin is a great base for walks and other outdoorsy outings. Climbers can cling to Caley Crags, Armscliffe Crag and the Cow and Calf (all within a 20-minute drive), golfers can take aim at a couple of courses within 15 minutes and there are orienteering courses five minutes away in Chevin Forest Park.
For a slice of history as you wander, head to Harewood House (20 minutes’ drive), Skipton Castle (half an hour) or Bolton Abbey (half an hour), stopping for a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway for added nostalgia. If a bit of animal magic’s more your style, head to Hesketh Farm Park or the Tropical World Leeds zoo, both half an hour away.
More interested in a slice of cake? The famed Betty’s tearooms in Harrogate (also half an hour) make a tasty stop on a tour of the town, taking in the Valley Gardens, Pump Room Gallery and a trip out to the RHS Harlow Carr Gardens.
