  • Wild camping on a Northumberland farm five minutes’ drive from Prudhoe
  • Hadrian’s Wall 15 minutes’ drive; Newcastle upon Tyne 25 minutes
  • Stunning country views; fresh eggs available; pubs half an hour’s walk
Peace. Far-reaching rural views. Level grass pitches. That’s what you get at Kyo Camping, part of a small family farm five minutes’ drive from historic Prudhoe in Northumberland. If you’re chasing a laidback family introduction to life under canvas, or a romantic adventure à deux, this is a clever pick for you. You can choose your own pitch in the camping field – in or out of the shade of the trees – and wherever you end up, you’ll be surrounded by farm fields for as far as you can see. No surprise then, that your only neighbours are likely to be a few sheep and lots of inquisitive chickens – the latter are suppliers of your breakfast eggs. Facilities at this pop-up wild camping site stretch only as far as single-sex loos and a water tap, and there’s no electricity as yet, so be sure to bring torches for getting around after dark. Keen to test your alfresco grilling skills? Bring a barbecue with you from home; there’s a basics shop in Prudhoe for supplies, and several pubs within five minutes’ drive (or half an hour’s walking distance) if you prefer someone else to do the cooking for you. Travelling to the north east without a car? There are local bus and train connections to Hexham and Newcastle.

Local attractions

Roman history, anyone? Head to the stretch of Hadrian’s Wall at Heddon-on-the-Wall (15 minutes’ drive) for a yomp alongside the ruin, or tour Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum (35 minutes) for views over a partially excavated fort plus interactive exhibits in the museum. Closer to home, the photogenic ruins of 12th-century Prudhoe Castle (10 minutes) are also worth exploring, and there are a couple of pretty spots by the lake for a picnic. If you like the sound of a day out in Newcastle upon Tyne (25 minutes), that's your chance to check out the wacky installations at the Baltic Exchange for Contemporary Art, take a selfie with Antony Gormley’s landmark Angel of the North or learn about local maritime history at the Discovery Museum. Stay on into the evening to eat in restaurants overlooking the River Tyne at Gateshead Quayside or graze on street snacks from Grainger Market. When it’s golf you’re after, there’s a course within five minutes’ drive, and you can dodge any rainy days with a play on the waterslides at Prudhoe Waterworld (also five minutes).
