Hexham in one direction, Kielder Water in the other – and here, around halfway between the two, on the edge of Wark Forest, is Stonehaugh Campsite, a fabulously peaceful spot from which to explore the many attractions of Northumberland.
It’s safe to say that this is a very well located site, surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of the Northumberland National Park and within easy reach of both Newcastle and Hadrian’s Wall. Closer to home, there’s some great gravel cycling in neighbouring Wark Forest, and access to lots of walking and cycling trails including the Pennine Way and North Pennine Cycle Route (NCN 68).
There’s an interesting history to the local village, Stonehaugh (pronounced Stone-hoff) – it was designed in the 1950s as a village for Forestry Commission workers, but only 34 of the planned 250 houses were ever built. That means it’s not big enough to support a shop or pub, so it's worth stocking up on supplies while passing through Hexham or Bellingham (both about 25 minutes’ drive away). The site also has a small shop selling essentials, including milk, pot noodles and biscuits.
Other facilities on site include a bathroom block (powered by a wind turbine and with solar-heated water), drinking water taps, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area. There are picnic tables on site, and more at the nearby Warksburn picnic area (10 minutes’ walk), where you can have a paddle in the burn too. Also a short walk away are the village play area and the village hall, which has a social club that’s open in the evening from Friday to Sunday.

- Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).
- Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.
- No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.
- Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.
- The charging of electric vehicles is not permitted on site.
