A little wilder corner

  • Remote site set on the edge of Northumberland National Park
  • A short drive to Kielder Water and Forest watersports activities
  • Café/bar on site selling local produce and crafts
Remote, wild, spacious and scenic are all terms rightly fitting The Boe Rigg, in Northumberland National Park a few miles from the market town of Bellingham. Walking and cycling routes are all around here, along with a huge range of outdoor activities within a short drive including the high ropes, watersports and zipwires of Kielder Water and Forest. Also within driving distance are several famed north of England attractions such as Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle, both under 40 miles, and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, under 50. The site's excellent facilities include a café/bar open daily to sell produce and handicrafts from local growers and craftspeople. Among The Boe Rigg's other amenities are accessible washrooms with toilets and hot showers, a launderette with washers and dryers and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available in the main building. Campfires and barbecues are both allowed but must be off the ground.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Beautiful location with good size mown pitches. Friendly welcoming staff and excellent having the restaurant onsite. Had dinner there and it was very good. Surrounded by fields of sheep.

Disliked: I can only comment on the ladies toilets but certain elements seemed a little worn out. Flooring coming away etc. Showers only had 1 hook on back of the door to hang stuff on. I didn't end up having a shower as there were groups of kids hanging about in there. Unfortunately my pitch was next to a tree swing which meant kids were constantly crossing my pitch to get to swing and then screaming and playing on the swing until 10pm and started again at 8am. My dog was on a lead but he found it unsettling. The dog next door to us also barked every time a kid went between our tents. It was such a shame as couldve been so peaceful watching the sunset. Most of the pitches down that stretch didn't have kids so to have a stream of kids coming through your pitch from the rest of the site was disappointing. If I had been there longer or got there earlier I'd have asked to go somewhere else. Instead I took refuge on the patio at restaurant and found some peace up there. Maybe a no kids area would be helpful. Parents were not in attendance most of the time and it seemed they considered their kids could scream and shout wherever they liked onsite until 10pm. I wouldn't recommend this site to my friends sadly as they either don't have kids or have quieter kids and would want to enjoy the peace of the location without screaming.

Liked: Good location, nice scenery and lots of space. Friendly welcome and happy for us to choose the best pitch for our unit.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such but could do with a dedicated washing up area as there was only one sink (that we could find) and it was in amongst other facilities used for the running of the restaurant/bar. Seemed a bit under provided for bearing in mind the number of campers in tents in particular.

Powered concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Most expensive of the site's we used
Basic campsite laid back
Hardstanding could be tight to get a larger caravan in . Grass to side uneven
Food from restaurant generous portion sizes
Bar onsite
Good for night sky

Disliked: Needs a little bit of finishing off shower curtains, first night struggled for hot water. Toilets just need repairs finishing off

Powered concrete slab caravan site

Liked: Having a restaurant/bar on site was a bonus. Dog-friendly in the bar area and cosy and welcoming.

Disliked: It was low season, so very quiet. At one point during our three night stay, we were the only caravan on the site. No sign of staff and the restaurant was closed that day (Sunday) so felt a bit lonely.

Local attractions

Kielder Water and Forest within 16 miles are full of watersports activities such as canoeing, sailing, and waterskiing, along with water walker and sea scooter hire. A high ropes course, climbing, zipwiring, fencing, archery and crossbow are among the many forest activities available on and above land. Three of the attractions of the Hadrian's Wall UNESCO World Heritage site are within a short drive: Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete in Britain; Vindolanda, and Chesters Roman Fort, six miles from Hexham. Also famed in the region is Alnwick Castle and Garden 37 miles away, made up of huge formal gardens including the world's largest treehouse, and in a setting that will be instantly recognised by Harry Potter fans (broomstick training is available during the summer months: how magic). The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is about 45 miles from here, to reach Bamburgh Castle and Holy Island via moorland, countryside and ancient forest. The site is 45 miles from Carlisle.
