General

  • Working farm on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors
  • Very close to the Cleveland Way
  • Dogs welcome

Captain Cook fans and Cleveland Way walkers: park your pitch at friendly and family-run Park Farm for a North Yorkshire hiking and history base.

It’s on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, with the Cleveland Way a mere field away, and is four miles from Cook’s childhood home of Great Ayton – you can see the Captain Cook moorland monument from the farm, along with seriously stonking views of the Hambleton Hills and Yorkshire Dales.

Park Farm has been a working beef cattle and sheep farm for over sixty years, and the friendly family team here can point you in the right direction for all sorts of North Yorkshire stuff, from local pubs to moorland walks. The farm has toilets, hot and cold water, and meter showers taking £1 coins. Unlimited car parking (at the farm, not by pitch) is included.

Canine campers are welcome, but please keep them on leads at all times.

Lovely area in North Yorkshire good toilets and wash area camping area was ok with tables with benches. Not the most level of area but as we were the only two tents we had the pick of the area pitch our tents.

    Disliked:

I like to have my car near to my tent so I don't have to carry my gear too far but had o park at the top of the field.
There must of been some kind of large gathering/Rave near by as there was loud music playing until 3am whitch kept us awake.

Brilliant. The campsite was so pretty and lhad all the facilities I needed. I had brought food with me which I used their microwave to heat so in no time at all I was all set up with the car nearby /a hot meal which I enjoyed alfresco on one of their seats looking out on a fab view with sweet little birds attracted by their feeders, around me. The owners were very hospitable too and they regularly checked the loos And showers/kitchen areas.

Clean toilets and showers, kettle, fridge, microwave among other facilities.
    Friendly, helpful staff.
Peaceful location. (Apart from the odd R.A.F. plane overhead, but you get that anywhere in the countryside.)
Advertised as a 'gentle slope', but honestly, once you're in your tent, you hardly notice.
More than value for money in my opinion. I will definitely be returning next year and subsequent years.

Small site in a remote and quite location with good basic facilities 26/08/2017

Reviewer's country: United Kingdom John S. Confirmed

  • Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

  • Liked:

This is a small site in a remote and quite location with good basic facilities and a friendly atmosphere. There is a choice of two fields for pitching. One is larger where you can take your car if the weather is dry, and the other smaller for tents only for which you need to leave your car on the adjacent driveway. Facilities include free use of an electric kettle, a microwave, a fridge and an electric point for charging your phone.

    Disliked:

At the price you can't really complain about this site. However, the showers didn't work very well. The one I used ran from hot to cold or from low pressure to a dribble. Both fields are on a bit of a slope so I tended to end up at the bottom end of my tent by morning. But, hey, it's camping!

Directions

From the south
From the A19 take the Stokesley (A172) turn-off. Stay on this road for approximately 8 miles and take the third exit off the roundabout (marked Great Ayton). After about half a mile turn right (signposted Kildale). Follow this road for approximately 5 miles and when you have passed 2 railway bridges take a right turn onto our farm lane. Turn left and go up the hill. If you get to Kildale village you have gone too far!

From the north
From the A19 take the A174 exit and keep left. Take the A172 exit and turn right; follow this for approximately 1.5 miles. At the roundabout take the third exit and go straight over the next roundabout. After approximately half a mile, turn left onto the B1292 (signposted Great Ayton), and at the road end turn right. Follow the road until you go over a bridge and bear left. At the next junction turn left and when you have passed 2 railway bridges, take a right turn onto our farm lane. Turn left and go up the hill. If you get to Kildale village you have gone too far!

Local attractions

Take to your feet to walk the Cleveland Way or the North York Moors, see the North Yorkshire seaside towns of Whitby et al, go surfing at Saltburn or plunge into the watersports of the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre – all within an hour at most of Park Farm.

Pick up the Cleveland Way at the village of Kildale for a fifteen mile hike to Saltburn-by-the Sea; once there, there are more walks around the Italian gardens and wooded glens if you’re not too done in, or settle down by the fire in the fifteenth century Ship Inn by the beach – possibly a much more sensible option with sore feet. The Saltburn Cliff Lift, the oldest water-balanced cliff tramway in the country, connects Saltburn-by-the Sea with the pier 120 feet below and runs daily in peak season.

Surfers and wannabes will find a couple of good surf schools and a surf shop at Saltburn, but if your watery pursuits lie in a different direction, make for Stockton on Tees and the Tees Barrage watersports centre, which has whitewater rafting lessons, canoeing, bell boating, sailing and powerboat trips.

Also from Kildale, the Esk Valley Railway takes about an hour to reach the seaside town and Goth haunt of Whitby. As well as its Dracula folklore, Whitby is known for its Captain Cook connections as it’s where Cook moved to from Great Ayton to learn the seafaring trade: take in the tale at the award-winning Captain Cook Memorial Museum at Whitby harbour. Whitby Abbey, set high on a headland overlooking the town, is also a handy stop for history sorts, and has a museum and interactive visitor centre.

From Whitby, go south for more surfing and guided ghost walks at Robin Hood’s Bay, then on to the bigger seaside towns of Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey. More kid-friendly fare can be had at the zoo and fun park of Flamingo Land in Kirby Misperton about 45 minutes’ drive from Park Farm, and there are several other family days out within an easy drive including Go Ape! at Dalby Forest and all the activities and attractions of the North York Moors National Park.
