Oaks 2020

  • Peaceful fishing site with 10 match and pleasure lakes
  • Leading coarse fishery with over 400 pegs and national competition
  • North York Moors and Harrogate within a half-hour drive
Game, set and… match. If you're a serious angling aficionado, The Oaks Lakes Caravan Park at Sessay in North Yorkshire is just the ticket: it's adjacent to a whopping 10 match and pleasure lakes making up one of the best-known coarse fisheries in the north. Fish to cast off for at The Oaks Lake include carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd, gudgeon, perch, barbel, ide, crucian, carb, golden tench and golden orfe – and the park also has a specimen fishing lake with grass carp to 25lbs, ghost carp to 26lbs and common mirrors to 28lbs. Site guests can buy reduced fishing day tickets at the side of the lake on the day they're angling to get started. The Oaks doesn't have fishing equipment for hire, but if you want to add to your kit, a fully-stocked on site tackle shop is there to cater to your needs – next door to a café serving hot and cold food. And if you're not a serious angling aficionado (either a beginner or a non-fishing type)? There's plenty here for you too: the site is in pole position for all sorts of off-site exploring, as it has easy access to the A1 and A19 and is handily placed for the gorgeous North York Moors, lots of country estates and the north's main towns and cities including York, Leeds and Harrogate. Pitches are set in a four-acre field with easy access to the fishing lakes. A toilet block with separate ladies', gents' and disabled-friendly facilities is next to the field, along with a screened chemical disposal point; the site also has a free hot shower. Finally, as it's a peaceful park set up for fishing, The Oaks doesn't allow rowdy guests and accepts adults only.

Liked: Peaceful

Disliked: 2 ladies toilets with broken seats and not cleaned everyday. Everyone (including those who were here for the fishing and not staying in touring area) using the disabled showers as radar key hanging up and the mens showers had lack of privacy. Not really a caravan touring site as this site is for hard-core fishermen and fishing only by pole. If you come here at end of August the local farmers are muck-spreading so you are unable to sit outside as the smell is so strong it makes you gag! Spoilt our last 3 days so we went home early. Did not see owners at all - no welcome whatsoever.

From the manager: Hi Ruth, Thank you for your review, We do have a problem with the seats in the lady’s as sometimes they unclick themselves as they are a new design of toilet seat which we are looking at replacing as we keep having to click them back on. We totally agree with the chicken muck smell which lasted a day and a half it was awful and luckily it was a one off, a poultry farmer some miles away from the site had piled loads of chicken muck just a field away ready to spread and plough into the fields however he left it there for 2 days and the strong wind was in perfect alignment with the site, this doesn’t happen regularly just to inform others, we are however near a pig farm which does smell occasionally if the wind is in certain direction.

Liked: A quiet well laid out and level site.

Disliked: We were near the facilities and the lights were very bright not subtle for sleeping. We were surprised that we couldn’t find general rubbish bins and more importantly to us recycling bins. We didn’t use the facilities so cannot comment.
