  • Small North Yorkshire site with views of the White Horse of Kilburn
  • In the North York Moors National Park, 10 minutes' drive to Thirsk
  • Two pubs within walking distance of the site; Cleveland Way close by
Whether you’re off to the North York Moors National Park to walk the Cleveland Way, mountain bike around Sutton Bank or tread carefully around abbeys and museums, Butter Hill Caravan Park is well situated to get going, as it's on the edge of the national park – with the 109-mile Cleveland Way trail around 10 minutes’ drive away (and it has quite the reputation for sublime scenery around the fringes of the moors). Look up and you’ll see a well-known North Yorkshire landscape… this small site is just below the White Horse of Kilburn, a chalk figure cut into the side of the hill. It’s 25 minutes’ walk away from the site for a look up close, and there are also other interesting nooks a short walk away, including the Mouseman Museum, Café and Visitors Centre (home to a collection of Mouseman furniture) two minutes’ walk away. On site, there are water points, but for some fancier potions to wet your tastebuds, there are all types of refreshments in the surrounding pubs. The site is on the edge of the village of Kilburn, so the local pub/restaurant is two minutes’ walk away. There’s another good pub in Coxwold, 30 minutes’ walk away or five minutes’ drive. As for shops, Thirsk, 10 minutes’ drive away, is your go-to.

Liked: Perfect small and quiet site with hook-up and water only, as expected, but this site is well worth a visit. A great view of the white horse and the stroll to the village pub is a pleasure. A "hidden gem" if you want peace and country quiet. The owners were very friendly and popped along and we had a lovely chat.

Liked: This is a wonderful spot. It is quiet and private. The hosts are welcoming, friendly, and full of useful local information. Each plot has its own water and EHU. The campsite is extremely tidy and wll maintained. The site it within 5 mins of the local pub and the Mouseman museum and workshop. Kilburn white horse is also within walking distance where you get a fantastic view of the Vale of York.
We knew from the booking that there was no toilet/shower block which wasn't an issue for us.
This is not a site for children.

Disliked: We found nothing to dislike.

Liked: Campsite is immaculate, level and in a lovely location. We had a beautiful view of the White Horse. There is lots to see in the surrounding area without travelling far, and stunning walks on the doorstep. As well as a lovely pub across the road!

Liked: This beautifully situated site in the lovely North Yorkshire village of Kilburn has EHU and water points to pitches (no WC or shower facilities).
We ate at the pub in the neighbouring village of Coxwold, also in Kilburn’s Forresters Arms and found both excellent and dog friendly.
We will definitely return.

Disliked: It is stated in the site’s booking conditions that dogs should be leashed at all times. We brought our own dog with us and he was tethered at all times.
Unfortunately, another visitor allowed their dogs to roam, frequently disturbing us and our dog.

Liked: We love this site. Ony 40 mintes up the road, nestled below the NYM White Horse in the village of Kilburn, also known for the beautiful furniture created by Mousey Thompsons team of exceptional craftsmen.
The site is impeccably clean, the owners are very welcoming and take the time to
come down to the site to make sure you have settled in. They are also about should you need anything.

The site only provides, water tap for each pitch, electric and the necessary waste disposal areas, but with a fully functioning van what else do you need.

Lots of walks on the door step, a village pub, with other pubs and cafes within a 2 mile radius. Wider amenities, 6 miles away.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

Flick back through the pages of history a little… this area’s a fitting place to take a look at times past, whether it’s roaming around the Tudor Newburgh Priory Estate (five minutes’ drive) or stopping by Byland Abbey (10 minutes) while on your cycles through the countryside for a look at the ruined gothic architecture. To continue your historic tour, you might want to plot out your route to The World Of James Herriot (15 minutes) for a museum all about the famous 20th-century vet… onto Thirsk (10 minutes) for a market town packed with museums of all sorts… or Ampleforth Abbey (20 minutes) to see how Benedictine monks once lived inside the monastery. Helmsley (25 minutes) is another market town where the past runs strong, as it has a castle, walled garden and abbey. But how about hiking and biking too? Sutton Bank (10 minutes) is a Dark Sky Discovery Site by night, but by day, the spotlight is on its walking, cycling and mountain biking trails. Handily, for those of you without your own wheels, there’s bike hire available. Monk Park Farm Visitor Attraction (five minutes) has a smaller one-mile walk for those of you who have little legs in your group, as well as interactive animal activities.
