  • Family-run site on a working farm between the Dales and Ribble Valley
  • Farm park and playground on site (tickets must be prebooked)
  • 20 minutes' drive to Skipton Castle and Pendle Hill; 30 to Malham Cove
Get away to this peaceful site: Thornton Hall Country Park lies on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, a landscape of stone bridges and deep forests, wild moors and hills. Here, there are plenty of trails nearby, as well as regular starry night skies. Staying at Thornton Hall Country Park means that you get 50% off the entry cost to the on-site children's farm park (on non-event days), where there is a splendid soft play, farm animals to 'ooh' over and family events. There's a packed schedule of daily activities in the farm park, from collecting eggs to handling rabbits and guinea pigs. The farm park's outdoor and indoor playgrounds ensure the Pennines weather never interferes with plans, and anyone still chasing thrills after descending the many slides in the soft play can head to the jumping pillows for more action. Away from the farm park, the site's facilities are mightily convenient, with modern toilet and shower facilities at hand. You're welcome to bring barbecues and sizzle your sausages while the sun sets and the cows settle to sleep. For other supplies, the café (open from 10am to 4pm) sells hot and cold food, snacks, desserts and hot and cold drinks (just as well, as you'll need a full tank for what's in store); takeaway is sometimes available too.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Pitches close to toilet and shower block. Beautiful views. Warden onsite if needed. Car could be next to tent pitch. We struggled as a family of 5 to take down tent and pack up for 1000hrs but the site was very patient, we were around 30-40 mins late. We had a lovely enjoyable stay here and happy we booked.

Disliked: The actual Thornton Hall attraction appeared quite pricey with 3 children, even with the generous discount as campers there. When my husband asked lady on reception, there was the entry fee, then some activities inside cost extra ontop. We were worried this would creep up with 3 kids who'd want to do everything so we went along to Skipton castle instead and we could take our dog there too. Looked a great attraction though but it was difficult that the kids could see a play ground ahead of them that they weren't able to use. It would be great to have a small play area for them that they could use as part of the campsite. Still a lovely family friendly site though.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The drive to the site is very picturesque, through the village and the moor.

Disliked: I tried to get in touch with the office to discuss the booking, for a whole week before our trip, both by phone and email and got not response at all.

When we arrived there was no record of our booking, we had to show the booking email. We were in a field which was uneven, and full of nettles and thistles.

There is 1 male toilet, 1 female toilet and 1 unisex toilet. Which was insufficient for demand from the sheer volume of people onsite booked on site. They were very smelly and dirty.

The showers are small, and annoying as you have to constantly push the button every few seconds to keep the water flowing. There was a worm by the plug hole one morning, which was grim.

In all, it was very over priced for what was on offer. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Lovely looking site in good location. Toilets and shows clean. Level pitches, was able to book last minute (however I should have done more research) good phone signal

Disliked: Small site that gets really busy. 8pm no noise rule not adhered too. Noise past 10pm as lots of families with children. Only three toilets and two showers, not enough for the amount of people. Booked a non electric grass pitch, had a tent pitch up right beside our van so could hear the family through the night and morning. Wouldn't recommend the site for couples as its not quiet, definitely for families with children.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Small campsite with plenty of space for the kids to run about and play in.
Good sized pitches
Easy check in
Good contact with the site, the toilets were blocked so I messaged the out of hours contact and was sorted in 5 mins.
Pithches clearly labelled
Super dog friendly
Had a very safe feel

Disliked: Hot air balloons firing up right next to the campsite around 7-7.30am which woke us up
Toilets seem to get blocked easily
Not a dislike for us as such but an honest review for anyone looking - the no noise after 8pm wasn’t adhered to whilst we were there. Like I say, this didn’t bother us but there were children and music playing up to 11pm.
The actual farm park isn’t dog friendly but the campsite is, which we didn’t actually know before booking (didn’t realise they were separate). It doesn’t make this very clear on Pitchup when asking if you want to book tickets for activities.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Good level, spacious pitches

Disliked: Facilities were poor, only 1 male and 1 female toilet, for the whole touring and camping sites, plus although they had hand washing Facilities, there was no means to dry your hands. Also there was only 2 showers for the whole site, so had to queue.
Also there wash no washrooms, ie sinks for getting washed or shaved etc.

Local attractions

Miles of circular path steeped in the mystery of the Pendle witches and the romance of the Brontë sisters, the Pendle Way passes through the farm. If you don't fancy the 45-mile full monty, sections of trail take you up Pendle Hill, or through Wycoller, the inspiration for Jane Eyre. You can also walk a chunk of the Pennnine Way from Thornton village, passing over Elsack Moor and down into the old village of Lothersdale. Skipton (15 minutes' drive) has a 12th-century castle that's hung onto its roof and dungeon through centuries of strife. The adjacent wood is the remnant of the ancient forests that once covered all of Yorkshire – it's full of trails and if you're lucky you'll spot kingfishers, herons and buzzards. Skipton is a handy spot for hiring bikes and taking boat trips down the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Head to the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford (20 minutes) to uncover the murky legends and the even murkier truths of the 17th-century Pendle Witch trials. Wizard fans should be sure to visit Malham Cove (half an hour), the massive cliffs featured in Harry Potter films. Finish off by following the trail to Janet's Foss, a waterfall said to be home to the Queen of the Fairies. Out here, it's not hard to believe it.
