  • Peaceful camping location on an estate in North Yorkshire countryside
  • A 30-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales; North York Moors 50 minutes
  • In the grounds of Grade 1-listed Forcett Hall, close to pubs and shops
Forcett Hall offers wild camping on a peaceful and scenic grassy site with a wonderful setting in the grounds of a Grade 1-listed mansion in North Yorkshire countryside. Its location is key here – Forcett Hall sits close to the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and it's in an area that's packed with all sorts of leisure and cultural attractions. You’ll need a car to explore, but in under an hour you can access dramatic North Yorkshire landscapes, and if the kids are really keen to head to the coast, you can be tucking into fish and chips on the prom at Saltburn-by-the-Sea in 50 minutes' drive. Back at your rather glamorous base, the camping field has plenty of space for families and their pooch pals to potter around and take in the landscaped gardens. There’s no electricity (bring a torch), but simple portable toilets are provided, and you can barbecue by your pitch. Keep supplies topped up at the convenience stores in Eppleby (a mile away) or (Richmond (15 minutes), where you’ll also find a staggering choice of tea shops and restaurants. Cute local villages like Hutton Magna and Ravensworth (both 10 minutes) are good hunting grounds shops stocking regional produce, while your hosts recommend stopping for a pint or sit-down meal at the traditional pub in Caldwell (five minutes).

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Location is good. Ease of checking in is very organised. For families wanting kids to be kids it's perfect with the 2 tree swings and ancient trees. Nice level site . Easy to get organised on arrival. Nice big pitches . Toilets dud have toilet roll and sink .

Disliked: Toilets and washing up facilities . Yes back to basics but cleanliness of the toilets was shocking .

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Quiet, large pitches on the outer edge of a field. Good views to the south, basic amenities but did what they needed.

Disliked: You “officially” can’t walk anywhere. The owners of the site obviously have nothing to do with the hall because there’s signs saying “no campers beyond this point “. We ignored this but if we hadn’t there would have been no where to walk our dogs.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The area and view

Disliked: The pitch we had was a mess from previous campers with cigarette stomps, lumps of charcoal and bits of broken rubbish. The portaloo was never cleaned whilst we were there and absolutely stunk and there was only one sink for washing dishes and washing faces, it wasn’t even plumbed in l! so if you took the plug out the water would land all over your feet. Such a shame as it was such a beautiful place and could be a magnificent campsite however the efforts has just not been put in.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Forget Hall was a lovely basic pitch surrounded by beautiful views and a great ‘Lake Walk’. Our host was very friendly and checked we were all settled in. The toilets were very cleans and well kept also.

Disliked: Not a great deal to dislike here, however with a little finesse and investment in a proper bin area and maybe echo loos it would gain a higher rating.
