  • Spacious pitches near Pickering in the North York Moors National Park
  • Whitby, Dalby Forest and Castle Howard within 35 minutes' drive
  • Small café and luxury bathrooms on site; dogs and kids welcome
On the southern edge of North York Moors National Park – and a geographically sensible choice for those intent on a hiking holiday – Bank Top Camping is a family-friendly site a 15-minute drive from Pickering. Woodland walks can be accessed directly from the site, but it’s not just the ramblers who find the location convenient: watersports enthusiasts can reach the North Sea coast in less than one hour, with places like Whitby (40 minutes’ drive) and Scarborough (50 minutes) among the top local choices. Spacious pitches sit on the edge of a large field fringed by tall, leafy trees, and they come with electric hook-ups and views over the Vale of Pickering, plus oodles of room for children to run around and play games. The kids might also enjoy making friends with the resident animals; speaking of which, while dogs are welcome guests at Bank Top Camping, they should be kept on a lead while on site. A small café sells hot drinks, locally made ice cream and a selection of home-baked goods (mmm… muffins), as well as honey produced on site by hard-working bees that you can watch at the fascinating Observation Hive. If you’re into making your own food, there’s a communal fridge freezer to store any essentials, and a sheltered washing-up area with plenty of hot water. Other facilities include a toilet block with luxury touches such as underfloor heating (blissful, on a parky Yorkshire morning), hot-water showers and hairdryers. There is also a laundry room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

What customers say

Top-notch, quiet spot. Clean, roomy pitches, brilliant facilities (showers are mint!). Owners are legends, super helpful. Handy for York Moors & coast. Bit breezy on top field sometimes, showers can be touch-and-go temp-wise, but mostly brilliant. Great for a chill break.

Power optional grass site

Liked We loved the location, its beautiful and so handy for picturesque Pickering. There is a brilliant forest behind the site that we loved exploring with our spaniel. The site was so family friendly and relaxed. It wasn't overwhelming and a lovely size. The showers and toilets are modern and always clean. Extra effort had gone in to make sure our two tents were next to each other. The ice cream, coffee and honey are also lovely and worth the money. Really good value site.

Disliked A little shop on site that sells basics such as milk, bread etc would have been good. We were also abit confused about checking out as didnt have any instructions and no one was around to ask as we were leaving. But these were minor and no other dislikes, its a truly wonderful place.

Power optional grass tent or campervan site (two person)

Liked 3rd visit to Bank Top. Just gets better every time. Keren and Ian are continually developing this lovely site. Extremely well maintained. Well organised and flexible shower block with ladies & gents obvz, plus disabled and a family shower room too. High quality liquid soaps in all - no dispenser nonsense. Used the ice pack freezer in the laundry for the first time on this trip too. Very thoughtful. Covered yet airy dishwash area and always a sponge and washup liquid laid on for all to use.

The “top field” for tents and campervans is level and easy to pitch in. Great views to south. The upside of no lighting is proper dark skies BUT remember your torch!

Coffees and ice creams from the reception barn are a welcome luxury and the team were also kind enough to receive my recipe box food delivery the day after I arrived.

Brilliant base to explore the North York Moors by foot, bike, car or even steam train.

So flexible about so much. Keep up the great work guys!

Disliked Disappointed that some other guests don’t seem to have flagged issues at the time, leaving it until their review to criticise. Please don’t read too much into those. This is one of the best sites I pitch at.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked Nothing

Disliked Facilities were not luxurious as stated, had to keep pushing the button for water in the showers, no temperature control, nearly got scolded, hair dryer in the disabled toilet, was broken, the tube was literally hanging out of the bottom of the hairdryer. We couldn't wait to get off this site

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The push type showers are a campsite standard and the majority of people comment positively about the hot water temperature and the quality of the facilities. Had I been made aware of the broken hairdryer tube, it would have been repaired/changed immediately… you just needed to tell me!

5 star campsite.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked What a fantastic campsite, facilities were clean and excellent.
We stayed for 3 nights and each evening was quiet and relaxing.
The site offered eggs and ice cream which I didn’t take advantage of but it was great to have the choice.

Disliked There is nothing I could fault, but if I had to name one, there was an hour one evening of annoying midges.

Power optional grass site

Liked Welcomed by owner and shown to our spacious level pitch with an explanation of facilities and locations for various services. The loos/shower blocks were very clean and well kept as were the rooms for washing and site fridge/freezers. The owner also has a little shop to buy coffee's, ice creams etc if you fancied - oh yes the ice creams were lovely after one of our walks. The site is well placed for visiting the Yorkshire Moors national park. Only 5 miles from Pickering and within 30 minutes or so of the coast - Scarborough and Whitby being the closest towns. Easy to get out to Cropton and Dalby Forests and the NYM Railway from Pickering on the steam trains is 15mins away. (Yes you can hear the steam train whistle occasionally - fabulous..) If you like a spacious well kept and managed site which is quiet and relaxing give this place a try, you may just like it as much as we did. If you like loud music and partying until the wee small hours - its probably not going to be your first choice. I have only positive things to say about our stay - I would highly recommend a visit and we shall return.

Disliked Nothing springs to mind.

Local attractions

Reward the kids for not complaining (much) during your hikes through the moors by taking them to Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes’ drive), with thrill rides and family-friendly attractions, plus a zoo with big cats, primates and farmyard animals. Or head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes), where a Go Ape park has treetop adventure courses for all ages. A spectacular country mansion in the equally spectacular setting of the Howardian Hills National Landscape, Castle Howard (35 minutes) might look familiar from TV dramas such as ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Victoria’. Elegant interiors include the Chapel, with its opulent pre-Raphaelite decoration by the likes of William Morris. Stroll around the harbour at Whitby (40 minutes), grabbing fish and chips or embarking on a coastal cruise to see seals and (if you’re lucky) dolphins. Back on dry land, climb the 199 Steps leading to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write ‘Dracula’.
