Street Head Caravan Park: Aerial view of the park

General

  • Among spectacular scenery in the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • Within walking distance of West Burton and Thoralby villages
  • Next door to a 17th-century inn serving food and local beers

Now these are views… head here with the camera for scenes right up any holidaymaker's street: Street Head Caravan Park, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, is in an area famous for its scenery and unspoilt countryside, and is surrounded by grazing countryside with Dale views across to the fells beyond.

Roll up here to take in the local walks and wildlife – you can walk up and down dales and over moorland from the site – or use Street Head as a base for exploring the wider Yorkshire Dales, the north-east and north-west coasts and the loveliness of the Lake District.

This is a place where you could certainly settle for a few days, as there are plenty of handy facilities: the park has a coin-operated laundry, free hot showers, toilets and an indoor washing-up room with a fridge, freezer and tourist information.

Street Head Caravan Park is in the valley of Bishopdale and has five pubs and restaurants within a few miles. The nearest, the 17th-century Street Head Inn, is very handily placed next door to the park offices for meals and local brews. A shop and a butcher are at West Burton about a mile and a half away, where there is also a traditional pub serving drinks and snacks all day as well as lunches and dinners. It's also home to the Cauldron Falls (a popular swimming spot in the summer months), a play area and a café.

The site was lovely. The toilet and shower block were brand new, as was the washing up area. Three sinks with washing up liquid provided in wall dispensers. The Street Head Inn next door was lovely and served fantastic food. The site owners were lovely and helpful as were the staff in the pub. We were pitched very close to the toilet block which was very handy. Would definitely use this site again.

Very hilly ablution block to far away not recommended for disabled people

From the manager...

Thank you for leaving your review.

While we hope everyone has an enjoyable stay with us, and the huge majority of those staying with us are very happy, we accept that we are not going to be everyone's cup of tea.

We are very friendly, approachable and do our best to help our guests where ever possible, so we would have appreciated the opportunity to have tried to rectify some of your concerns. For example, offering an alternative pitch, closer to the facilities would have been easily achieved.

I do feel some of your comments and rating score rather harsh however, so I would like to take this opportunity to address some of these.

Very Hilly - You booking a very last minute stay in the Yorkshire Dales (well know for hills) plus there are many photos of our site on Pitch Up clearly showing the topography. The majority of pitches on site have been levelled for improve our customers comfort, but there is nothing more we can feasibly do.

Ablution Block too far away - The facilities are as central as possible to all users and the furthest anyone would need to walk is 120m from their pitch. I am, however, very pleased that you gave us full marks for cleanliness (very much appreciated) as this is something we pride ourselves on.

Not recommended for disabled people - On this point I would partly agree with you. We are not set up for very physically disabled visitors. You don't mention if you are disabled or with mobility issues. Had I been made aware prior to booking or even on arrival, I would like to think I could have been able to help in someway to make your stay easier. I would like to add that we have had many customers with mobility problems or mental disabilities would have thoroughly enjoyed staying with us. We don't have disabled facilities, though you would know this when booking as Pitch Up has a list of facilities for each site.

Low Rating for: -
Customer Service - I don't believe you gave us a chance to rectify anything during your brief stay, nor did you contact us before arrival requested a pitch close to the facilities.
Child Friendliness - I'm so confused by this - you are 2 adults travelling without children. I would suggest that potential customers look at the reviews of those staying with children for advice in this area.
Wifi - There is very good wifi near the cottage. I presume you left before getting the passcode. Another thing that would have been easily rectified had you spoke with us.
Facilities - Our facilities are modern, spacious and kept clean. We have lots of comments for customers both face to face during their stay and in reviews. You also gave 5/5 for cleanliness. I fail to see why you would only give 2/5 for our facilities.

I strongly believe that your overall score of 2/10 is not a true reflection of our touring park and campsite. And I sincerely hope that potential customers will be able to see through this.

Camp site and facilities were clean and tidy.
The couple who own the camp site were more than helpful!. 1st night our pitch was sloped and they moved us so we were more comfortable. On Thursday our car wouldn't start and they were more than happy to come and help and get our car started.
Lovely family and lovely stay! It was that good we are booking up again for next weekend.
Lots to do around here for your little ones.

Local attractions

There are plenty of places within walking distance of Street Head Caravan Park: West Burton has been described as one of the loveliest villages in England and has a well-kept village green leading to the natural waterfall of West Burton Cauldron.

The waterfall flows downstream into the River Ure to reach the famous Aysgarth Falls a couple of miles from Street Head and a favourite haunt of writer Wordsworth and painters Turner and Ruskin; the National Parks Information Centre here has guides to local walks, guided walks and activities like climbing and caving. The area around Street Head has miles of signposted footpaths for dale, moor and village-to-village strolls too.

For kids, the cathedral city of Ripon at the edge of Wensleydale (about 40 minutes’ drive away) has the Lightwater Valley theme park with a farm, a falconry centre and the UK’s first Angry Birds Activity Park. Newby Hall Adventure Garden, also at Ripon, has an interactive water area, playgrounds, pedalos and a miniature railway.

Or take the family to be bamboozled at the pyramid, passages and tunnels of Forbidden Corner at Coverdale (20 minutes), a former folly probably best described as ‘delightfully bonkers’.

Must see

  • Jervaulx Abbey (17.3 kilometres)
  • Richmond Castle (22.6 kilometres)
  • Easby Abbey (EH) (23.5 kilometres)
