  • Quiet back-to-basics site at Shiptonthorpe edging the Yorkshire Wolds
  • Hull half an hour’s drive; York 35 minutes; Hornsea Beach 40 minutes
  • Walking and cycling from the grass pitches; takeaway 10 minutes’ walk
Wake up to the peace and quiet of East Yorkshire countryside at House Martins Camping, a back-to-basics campsite with a limited number of pitches on an expanse of level meadow. In Shiptonthorpe village, right on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds National Landscape, there is plenty of wildlife to see on site, from owls, bats and pheasants to the deer and hares that inhabit the surrounding countryside. There’s no need to leave any dogs at home; well-behaved canines are welcome on site too – and there are plenty of dog-walking opportunities direct from the pitches at this family-run and family-friendly site. Barbecues (raised off the ground, please) are allowed. No need to bring food for your whole stay, as you can restock at supermarkets and butchers in Market Weighton (five minutes’ drive) or Pocklington (10 minutes). Both towns have cafés, bakeries, pubs and takeaways. There is also a milk vending machine in Shiptonthorpe, 10 minutes' walk from the site. If you’d prefer to abandon the car when you set out exploring, there is a bus stop five minutes’ walk away, which takes you to historic York (35 minutes by bus) one way, or Hull (half an hour) in the other direction. The facilities on site include toilet and shower blocks, along with a washing-up area with hot and cold water and a tap for drinking water. There is no electric hook-up on site, but there are charging facilities for mobile phones and power packs. The site encourages recycling; bins are provided. You're also welcome to bring your own firepit, and if you don't have one, the site has firepits for hire and wood available to purchase.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked 10/10 for the family who run the site! They were incredibly friendly and gave us such a warm welcome. They regularly checked around the pitches to make sure everyone was okay. They really couldn’t do enough for you if you needed any help.

Unfortunately, our pitch did have quite a few ants, but the owner very kindly put down some ant powder to try and stop them getting into the tent. Once we realised just how many there were, we kept our cool box and food in the car. We really appreciated them trying to help with the problem.

It’s a small campsite with EXCELLENT facilities! 5*

Clean, hot showers and thankfully not the push button type!

Clean toilets with turn taps.
Pot washing area with one sink. The only downside was that people sometimes left the water bowl full of mucky water.

Dog lead hook ups are available, which are really handy if you need to be hands-free while washing pots or sorting things out.

They also have a microwave, kettle, fridge/freezer and charging lockers, although we didn’t personally use these.

We had a lovely flat corner pitch (number 3) it suited us perfectly.

There’s also a bus stop just a maximum minute walk from the site, which is brilliant if you want to leave the car on your pitch and head out without driving.

There’s a local Coop and garden centre just a 5 minute walk away, which also has an onsite farm shop, cafe serving lovely coffee and a restaurant. We enjoyed a well earned carvery after packing up and it was lovely very dog friendly too.

You’re allocated a pitch on arrival. Fires and BBQs are allowed, although for obvious reasons we didn’t have either.

We were really fortunate with the other campers during our stay everyone was friendly and respectful.

Apologies if you heard our car boot being shut a few too many times! (We kept it open as long as we could’ve . We would normally unpack everything from the car and leave it alone, but because of the ants we had to keep our food and cool box in the car.

We felt very safe throughout our stay. We’ve previously paid more at other campsites and received much less in terms of service and facilities, so we felt this site offered excellent value for money.

We’d also read previous reviews mentioning road noise. Personally, we found this to be very unfair and perhaps a little nit picky. It’s a very quiet location if anything, there was only the slightest dull background noise from the road. It certainly didn’t bother us or affect our stay at all.

Overall, a really friendly, well kept little site with fantastic facilities and lovely hosts.

Small tip to book contact them on Facebook and book direct it’s cheaper.

Thankyou for having us <3

Disliked Packing up :)
Not really a dislike, but the only thing that could have improved our stay would have been somewhere to let our dog off lead for a sprint or two. We walked our dog regularly, but somewhere for him to have a run and chase a ball would have been ideal.

Liked Just enjoyed 3 nights at this lovely site. The owners are really friendly and helpful. The site is well maintained and pitches are spacious. The facilities are lovely, very clean and modern. Very handy to have a communal fridge, microwave and kettle. The village itself is beautiful and there is a little park a 5 minute walk away. Definitely worth a visit to the milk shed whilst there too. This was a highlight for my little boy. We will definitely return.

Brilliant site, run by people who camp themselves for campers, so they know what campers need to have a pleasant stay. Great facilities, very clean, light and airy. Super showers (more of a wet room style), outdoor sink for washing up, excellent additional provision of microwave, kettle, and big fridge freezer..

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We recently stayed at House Martins Camping and had a really enjoyable time, especially with the kids.
The site has plenty of open space, which made it ideal for children – they had room to run around freely without feeling hemmed in. It’s a relaxed, family-friendly spot that worked well for us.

Facilities were practical and useful. There’s an onsite kitchen area where you can cook, make hot drinks, and use a fridge and freezer, which was a real help. They also provide lockers so you can charge phones and power banks – handy when there’s no electric hook-up on the pitches.
