Viking bell tent

Liked: Pleasant site, lovely showers under the trees. A genuine eco feel. Bell tent we hired was clean and tidy. Nice bottle of wine on arrival. Fun little kids play area, nice to see horses and donkeys on the farm and fun to collect eggs. Good that it had some solar charge points for phones etc. The location is good for getting to other areas and is very rural. Bridlington, Scarborough, Filey etc are a pretty close drive and there’s lots of nice little villages around and about. The eco toilets were clean as was washing up area and shower area. There was a book swap which was a nice touch. The tent was relatively well stocked with shortbread, plates and and cups, a frying pan, kettle and cards etc. The wildflower meadow was past it’s best but still very pretty - i imagine at the height of poppy season it would have been incredible Kids enjoyed collecting their own eggs and there was plenty of space for them to run around in.

Disliked: Some things just hadn’t been fully thought through. There was a stove in our tent and logs. Half the logs were too big to fit in the stove and there were no firelights on kindling - we did manage to find a few bits of wood on site and use these but this left the tent a bit smokey. The owners did being a bag of small sticks and some firelighters for us when requested the second day (and they were very nice and helpful!) Quite a few sets of solar lights on the the tent were out of order and half full of water. For the price paid this was a bit of a disappointment - overall though we had a lovely stay.

Local attractions

It’s easy to get out onto the local network of public footpaths, including the Chalkland Way and the Yorkshire Wolds Way, to hop on the bike and set off along National Cycle Route 164 to Beverley, or get on the coast-to-coast Way of the Roses cycle ride directly from the site. The museums, galleries, shops and markets of ancient York (40 minutes’ drive) will keep everyone entertained. When you’ve taken the kids to JORVIK Viking Centre to learn about 10th-century York, settle in a River Ouse-side pub for a drink and snack, or climb up the tower of York Minster for glorious views of the city. Beverley (25 minutes) has an ornate Gothic-era minster as well as long walks on the Westwood meadows, while Pocklington (20 minutes) has lots of unusual shops and prize lilies in Burnby Hall Gardens. Kids clamouring for the seaside? It’s half an hour’s drive to the cliff-backed beaches, rib cruises and amusement arcades in Bridlington, or you can head to Fraisthorpe Beach (35 minutes) for dog walking, kite-surfing and horse riding. If they’d rather be on hard-core rollercoasters, maybe a day at Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes) will be on your to-do list?
