  • Simple pop-up site across two acres of a Co.Durham working farm
  • On the edge of North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty; dogs welcome
  • In the village of Eggleston with easy access from the B6282
Bedding down on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty is a fine idea if you’re in the market for some scenic walks – and that’s exactly the location you’ll get at West Barnley Campsite. This pop-up site is part of a Co.Durham working farm on the outskirts of the village of Eggleston, a few minutes’ walk from the boundary of the AONB. Lots of fabulous landscapes are within easy reach here, including waterfalls and forest trails, with places like the Bowes Museum and Raby Castle close by too. This is a simple site but a well-kept one, with showers and portable toilets provided and plenty of space in the two-acre field. There are lovely views all around the field, which is edged by a little stream. It’s a rural location indeed (think Shetland ponies on site and cows and sheep in the neighbouring fields) but one that doesn’t involve lots of driving along winding lanes – in fact, it’s easily accessed from the B6282 at the bottom of Folly Top. Campfires and barbecues are welcome on site, so you may well want to bring some supplies along – there’s a butcher and small supermarket in Middleton in Teesdale, plus several shops and a bigger supermarket in Barnard Castle (both 10 minutes’ drive). For treats that you don’t have to cook, Eggleston has a village pub and there’s a café 10 minutes’ walk away at Eggleston Hall. If you don’t mind a slightly longer trip, the farm shop and tea room at Mainsgill Farm (25 minutes) are well worth the effort.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Remoteness of the site with a stunning view is the perfect spot for a pop up site. The owners were great people, diversifying a little patch of grass with added convenience of an on-site toilet and shower. Hiring a firepit from the hosts is a must to watch the stars.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We had the site to ourselves but the pitches are plenty big enough with a great sized grass area in new tween to not feel busy even when full. The views are gorgeous and the oak trees and babbling brook. We star gazed under a star strewn sky watching shooting stars and spotting constellations which was magical. The shower and toilet huts are cute with a fantastic outdoor changing room (with views if you’re tall enough and the sound of the stream right by you). Hosts are lovely and popped round with our firepit when we arrived.

Disliked: The changing room could be problematic in wind/rain so have your stuff in a waterproof bag and maybe use a changing poncho/robe if you have. The shower isn’t very powerful for rinsing hair so need take this into account if you’re staying longer than a couple of days, was lovely for a body wash though. Could do with more than one toilet/shower for when it’s busier.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Really big pitches, cool fire pits, owner responded fast to phone calls when an issue arose, toilet was always clean and fresh toiletries, good prices

Disliked: Needs another shower and toilet cubicle - 1 is not enough for a site this big, and maybe a shelter area + another sink for washing up, or at least an air fresher daily

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Really quiet, clean and peaceful site. Shower and toilet were perfect for us. Great views from the site and good location for access to different local attractions (high force, North pennines, hadrians Wall, etc.). Felt almost like wild camping but with good facilities.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Great setting, clean shower and toilet. Got the impression the owners are nice people

Disliked: Had to clean the toilet after other campers, more regular checks needed. No general waste disposal area. No where to wash dishes. Water for the shower was barely warm. 2nd toilet needed, cover outside shower needed.
