  • Luxury glamping pods on the banks of the River Derwent, County Durham
  • A 15-minute drive to Derwent Reservoir; half an hour to Durham
  • Private bathrooms, well-equipped kitchens, hot tubs on the patios
Set in a grassy paddock on the banks of the River Derwent, Hidden Retreat Glamping offers a real touch of luxurious living in hand-crafted wooden pods. Set in gorgeous countryside near Consett in County Durham, each pod has an arched glass entrance to make sure you make the most of the glorious views, even when you’re pottering around inside. The cleverly designed pods maximise space to sleep four in comfort – on a double bed and a corner sofa bed that converts into another double – and each has its own decorative theme. They are equipped with pretty much everything you could need during your stay, including a bathroom with shower, loo and basin (complimentary luxury toiletries are a thoughtful touch here). A sink, microwave and cooker come as part of the deal in the kitchens, as well as a welcoming starter pack of tea, coffee and similar in case you haven’t had a chance to stock up on essentials. The spacious living areas offer feet-up time in front of the TV, and a dining table for eating inside on cooler evenings, and the pods are heated for extra cosiness too. All set up for alfresco dining with a barbecue (the nearest shop is at Shotley Bridge, five minutes’ drive) and firepit, the patio areas catch the evening sun, so why not really up the wow factor and take a sunset dip in the hot tub, glass of something chilled in hand?

The Oley 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Perfect location looking on to the river. The pod was fully equipped with everything you need and super clean. So cosy and the hottub was a lovely extra :) we will definitely be back!

Disliked: Not a dislike as such but check out is 9.30am, a little later would be better so we didn’t have to dash away.

The Annandale 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Oh where to start....... We came to stay in The Annandale Pod for 4 nights for New Year as a couple. Before we arrived we recieved a very detailed email with all of our check in info which was very handy and appreciated. On check in we were rather excited by the electric gates, it felt very secure and private which was just what we had hoped. The parking is seconds away from the pod so no need to trail your luggage far. The pod itself was much bigger than we were expecting for a glamping pod. It was spotlessly clean and we were greeted with some fresh made brownies and cookies which was such a nice touch and were delicious. It immediately felt very homely. The pod had everything we needed and more for our stay, all the little details like the bread knife, trays, plastic cups for outside, full bbq utensils, tinfoil, lighter for the fire pit were great as these were things we didnt think about. There was wifi, we enjoyed chilling on the couch with a movie in the afternoon. There was a guest book which was very cute and a guest information book which had all the information you could need, there was even take away menus in there which was great. Location is perfect with river walks close by but also a small town with bus stops that take you into the metrocentre and Newcastle so it really does give you options for your stay to be as busy or relaxed as you want. The hot tub was amazing, warm and spotless, really missing this now we are home!! Overall amazing stay, hosts were very friendly and only a text away. Definitely will stay again and 100% reccomend

Local attractions

Outdoors buffs can take dinghies and paddleboards out on the water at Derwent Reservoir (15 minutes), which is also a hub for peaceful waterside strolls, fishing from the banks and possibly being lucky enough to spot the resident ospreys flying overhead in summer. Walkers and cyclists will also be happy here: you can pick up hiking paths along the River Derwent directly from site, and join the 12-mile Derwent Walk Railway Path at Shotley Bridge (five minutes’ drive) – this popular trail runs between between Consett and Swalwell, taking in landmarks including the former steelworks at Consett. If you’d like to find out more about regional industrial history, head for Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (25 minutes), where outdoor displays include housing from a 1900s pit village and farm cottages laid out as if in the 1940s. Durham (half an hour) is the place for spectacular medieval architecture in the cathedral and riverside castle, as well as lively nights out in pubs and restaurants, and for a day in the big city, Newcastle (35 minutes) has all bases covered with shops, museums and art galleries.
