  • Spacious pitches in the County Durham countryside
  • Bishop Auckland 10 minutes' drive; half an hour from Durham
  • Dogs, barbecues and campfires allowed
Set in the middle of the County Durham countryside, Meadow Park farm is a green and grassy spot for pitching up in the 'Land of the Prince Bishops', as the county is known locally. While royalty and religiosity defined this region in the past, today the landscape is widely appreciated for its mix of historic towns, pretty landscapes and easy access to other scenic spots, including the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (from 20 minutes' drive), the Lake District (just over an hour to the west) and Northumberland National Park ( just over an hour to the north). This welcoming site allows dogs, barbecues and campsites, so you can bring the whole family along for a traditional camping experience in a laidback setting. The facilities provided by the site are well-maintained and handy to have for long or short stays away from home, with key amenities including toilets, showers, a laundry room and a drying room. A play area is also available for families with kids. The nearest town, Bishop Auckland, is a 10-minute drive away and is home to shops, restaurants, supermarkets and several historic attractions, including Auckland Castle.

Local attractions

Since you’re in such a historic region, investigating the past might be one of the first things on your mind. Locomotion (15 minutes’ drive) is a railway museum with locomotion models if that’s your sort of thing. Otherwise, The Bowes Museum (25 minutes) houses a huge collection of old art. Of course, there are historical sites that can be visited in the flesh too, like Barnard Castle (20 minutes) and the National Trust’s Moulton Hall (half an hour). The former has views over the river Tees and 12th-century enforcements, while the latter is a 17th-century manor house that can be visited with an appointment. Durham city centre (30 minutes) has more historical sites and city attractions, including a botanical garden, castle and museum. When you’re not chilling in the city or your countryside spot, catch an open-air live action show at Kynren (10 minutes). The next morning, you could take it easy with a peaceful walk around Low Barns Nature Reserve (10 minutes), seeing what wildlife you can tick off on your way around.

Liked: The site is still very new and the owners are absolutely lovely. Really made a big effort to get to know the people staying but did not torture you.
Toilets were kept very clean, there are 3 toilets and 3 showers. It was fine for when we were there as we had a toilet in our motor home but not sure I’d want to queue there with 3 children when the site is full.
There is plenty to do in the area, we were not bored at all. Absolutely loads on offer in a 10/15 minute drive and loads of supermarkets nearby if you run/forget anything. Owners are also very knowledgeable on what is going to be happening in the area.
You can buy logs for £5 a bag from the owners and have a fire, this was very lovely touch and we really enjoyed doing this as a family one night.
We would definitely come back in the future, we had a lovely stay, well worth the money in our opinion.

Disliked: Nothing, we had a lovely time.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We had a nice stay here with family and friends. Our group was placed in a separate field which was ideal for us and meant plenty space for the kids to play.

Disliked: There was never any soap in the toilets, nor any hand sanitizer at the waste disposal point.

There are also several quite deep holes dotted around the site from old fire pits - these are not easy to spot in the dark and could be very dangerous. It would be a good idea to fill them in or cover when not in use.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Great site. We were there with friends and we were all put together in a field where we could put the footy goal up. Kids had the best time and made some lovely friends. We had a camp fire but didnt need to take our own wood as owner prefers you to use his.

Disliked: It rained a little but we all went to the local pub for shelter and then it sharp brightened up.

Liked: Disspointed withers booing process, as was given option to select arrival time which wept at 14:00hrs. On day whilst on route we were sent a text from owner toadvsie access was 16:00hrs.

Forst impressions when arrived was not great, when met at gate, there was no welcome and felt rather odd.

However, must of caught owner on a bad moment as once In site the owner was very accommodating, site is on a hill so ensure your have wheel chucks. Facility basic but well maintained. Pitches are very close together.

Nice site but give it a chance as first impressions are not great.

Liked: We got back yesterday from a long weekend. The site was lovely, small enough to get to know other people. Everyone had a decent amount of space. It was a relaxed site as long as people were being respectful.

Billy, the owner is really friendly, he makes a point of speaking to everybody in the evening to make sure they are having a good time. He took us to meet another family, knowing that we would get on well, we ended up having an unexpected but great last night!

The site is peaceful, the dogs in the distance that people mentioned aren’t that loud, if you wake up you can just hear them but they wouldn’t keep you awake.

The facilities are good and they are very clean.

We loved that we had a fire pit next to our pitch and felt that the cost of the wood on site was good

It’s a lovely place!

Thanks Billy…. Mishel and Kala ️

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Staff member helpful

Disliked: Only 3 toilets and showers. Clearly not enough to cater for morning toilet needs for site.
Large group of friends in several large tents very noisy from 06.00hrs Saturday morning continuous to 01.30hrs Sunday morning and again from 06.00 Sunday morning.
Grass cuttings left on site leaving footwear untidy and toilet floors grass everywhere.
