  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with playground and communal firepit on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. Barbecues are available if you feel inspired to cook, and there's a communal firepit too for sociable evenings. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

Lovely, well-kept park in pretty country, great for families. Visitors loved the clean loos, quiet vibe, swimming pond, sauna, playground & walks. Owner's a legend! Mostly ripper stays, though a couple heard other campers or trains.

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked Clean, quiet area, plenty of toilets and showers. We are first time campers, only stayed one night to trial the kids. And whitehouse farm was a great choice, completely hassle free and the owner introduced himself and made us feel very welcome.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Beautiful, well-maintained, and thoughtful gem of a campsite! The camping field is small, with only 6 tent spaces, but each large enough to accommodate large tents and not feel like you are on top of each other. There is a small field and playground on the campsite. You walk through the forested glamping pod area, past the toilet/shower block, and across a bridge to get to the site. Wheelbarrows and carts available to truck your stuff over. There is a communal firepit and big skies (or you can make your own little fire).

The sauna (costs extra) is really lovely overlooking the swimming pond. The pond is shallow enough for kids to splash in (supervised), but has a little deep area carved out for sauna cold plunges.

The bathrooms are well-maintained with soap and a towel and there is a washing up sink that had dishsoap and sponge (perhaps left by previous campers and not usually there.) Rob has done a brilliant job fine-tuning this campsite, and I couldn't recommend it more.

Disliked I would really have to split hairs to add anything that I disliked!!

The campsite next to us had several cartfuls of gear and found it tricky that you cannot drive up to your site, but we were prepared for that.

I did feel a bit guilty going for late night or early morning wees as the area through the glamping pods has stone pathways. But perhaps they couldn't hear it!

Woodpecker shepherd's hut

Liked We had the most amazing time in this idylic little hideaway. We have a profoundly autistic son and it was safe and secure for him to be at one with nature, relax and play in the playground. Everyone was lovely and friendly to speak to and the accommodation was perfect. My partner enjoyed the sauna, we had the loveliest walk around the orchards and enjoyed a late night fire. It could not have been better. Thank you Rob xx

Disliked That we only stayed one night!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked We arrived to a warm welcome and a very quiet campsite, lovely secluded feel and very safe and friendly atmosphere. The play area was a big success for our daughter who made friends with other children staying. We gave a unathletic attempt at the triathlon training loop which was a nice addition. Rob made us feel very welcome and it was a well placed site for bury st edmunds.

Disliked The facilities were clean and showers hot, but when it was busier then it did feel like an extra shower would have been useful and on a couple of occasions toilet roll ran out, but just a quick word to Rob and they were replenished

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
