  • Busy, well-equipped site surrounded by the open Suffolk countryside
  • Half an hour’s drive from Sutton Hoo; 45 minutes from the coast
  • Theatre, restaurant, mini golf, owl sanctuary and play area on site
Looking for a Suffolk spot with lots of open space? The dog-friendly Stonham Barns Holiday Park might hit the sweet spot. Well-placed for the Suffolk and Norfolk countryside and coast, this place is equal parts relaxing and active. The latter is very much helped by the fact that the site is part of the Stonham Barns Golf Park site, which has a whole host of family-friendly (and quite frankly fabulous) attractions… There’s a pirate-themed miniature golf course, a sensory room and a funfair with rides and bumper cars, which should all prove a hit with pint-sized guests. No need to go hunting in the trees: the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary on site has over 80 owls and daily flying displays featuring birds of prey. Catch a comedy or tribute act at the Aspal Theatre, sojourn at the fishing lakes or get creative at the pottery painting studio, all of which are on site. Water activities are available on the lake, including paddleboarding, kayaking, zorbs and paddleboard yoga - guests are welcome to bring their own paddleboard or hire. Among these attractions are handy foodie places too. There’s a tearoom if you’re craving an afternoon tea and cake, a restaurant powered by local produce and a village shop selling essential food fare. These pair well with the bar and clubhouse, which has sports screens and celebrity evenings, and a shopping village full of niche independent shops. Along with a showground hosting weekly events like car or dog shows, a Sunday car boot fair and free bouncing pillows, these are all one to two minutes’ walk from the pitches. On the immediate site, however, the facilities include showers, toilets, a washing-up area, disabled facilities, wifi, a kids’ play area and spaces for kids to run around and let off steam. There's also a post office on site which provides cash back and other banking services.

Liked: Nothing to fault at all. Great pitches , we had a whole field to our 6 Campervans. We had a ball ! And the bar was close by to watch the football and grand national. All staff and facilities were fantastic.

Disliked: The showers in the men’s Loo’s Near the bar were very temperamental… either red hot or ice cold.

Liked: Spacious, fun fair was good with friendly staff, Would be nice if there was a daily charge for campers to use all facilities as can work out very expensive. Club room was very nice offering food and entertainment. Plenty of activities to choose from, nice selection of shops. Owl sanctuary was well worth a visit.

Disliked: No swimming pool, toilets and showers were not great. No temperature control for showers, water turns off after 30 seconds so constantly needing to push button. Need cleaning and replenishing more often, especially when there’s an event on. Children’s play area needs more facilities, the play area in the owl sanctuary was better.

Liked: Close to attractions(although packed into area with other holidaymakers).

Disliked: Moved to smaller area(opposite showground)due to flooding of main camp area which was OK but showers did not work. Had a knock on caravan door and was advised by a lady that showers were not working due to boiler issues which was disappointing as showers were electric so didn't require a boiler(cannot stand lying, honesty is the best policy)both showers were broken,In the ladies defence she did offer a single ladies shower as a substitute somewhere else on site. Worst of all though was the sewage being pumped or leaked into the rainwater drainage ditches behind the pitches by golfing area ,this will have a very negative affect on wildlife and is wholly avoidable. Finally the elsan area was for both grey water and toilet waste and water supply to clean parts was a major trip hazard.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: We spent the Easter weekend here with all our family members for a fisk family get together we weren’t on the main campsite properly due to the recent wet weather exploring the shops and the Easter market we had a go on the fun fair and went in the club house most evenings which is nice and spacious. The children were a little upset the soft play area was closed for safety reasons but overall a very good friendly site and looking forward to returning more in the summer and doing more of the activities

Disliked: The children soft play closed in the club house for Health and safety.

Liked: Wifi is free but did not work at the second position we were put.

Disliked: We had booked a four nights stay. They had a problem in that the grass pitches (which we had booked) could not be used as the land was water-logged. However, we only found this out after arrival - they had not warned us. An email would have been a good idea. The official check-in office was closed and we had to phone the general number to make contact. Response was quick enough and we were guided to a hard standing pitch, which turned out to a car park/exhibition area. Clearly a last minute fudge to deal with a problem (us). Electric hook up was available, but was a long walk to get water, toilets were functional but poor, was no facility for disposal of grey water (we were told to put it down the Elsan drain - not an easy lift with a full grey water container). 24 hours later we were told we would have to be moved. Where we had been placed was needed for an antiques fair. We were not told this by the site management but by the guys who were putting up marquees for the fair. There was no contact from the site management at all after the initial arrival. We were moved to a roadway, not a pitch. The marquee guys were most helpful and apologetic, but where were the site management? On the roadway we were at the entrance to the onsite golf course, so for the rest of the stay we had golfers and dog walkers passing both sides of the caravan from early in the morning. This was all a disappointing shambles, not helped by the invisibility of the management. I understand that the underlying issue was the waterlogged ground, but I think there should have been some contact from the site to us before we arrived as they clearly had no proper plan B.

Local attractions

With all the attractions on site, it might be a while till you look outwards in search of entertainment. However, when you do, the Suffolk coastline is splendidly within reach, as the site is on the A1120 tourist road. Thorpeness (50 minutes' drive), Aldeburgh (45 minutes) Southwold (50 minutes) deliver on walks, watersports and simple seaside amusements. This is also an excellent place to channel your inner historian and deep dive into the past. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) is a Norman castle with a walk across the 10-metre-high walls. Sutton Hoo (half an hour) is just as spectacular, with two medieval cemeteries where a ship with Anglo-Saxon pieces was found. Perhaps pretty walks and eating out in restored Victorian buildings next? Snape Maltings (40 minutes) on the river Alde is a splendid setting for strolls and cycles, whether around the riverside loop or joining the Suffolk Coast Cycle Route 41. Take in the scenery on a river boat or sip on something caffeinated in the many independent eating venues in the Victorian buildings.
