  • Quiet rural campsite on the track of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway
  • In central Suffolk, half an hour's drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • Simple campsite in the grounds of a farm; half a mile from the A140
Take the little ones to stomp through the Suffolk countryside or find a peaceful plot for a catch-up with friends at Brockford Sidings Campsite, a quiet rural site on the trackbed of the old Mid-Suffolk Light Railway. Although no trains have passed this way since the 1950s, it's still possible to see what the line known affectionately as the 'Middy' was like if you walk five minutes over the road to well-preserved Brockford station, where there's a volunteer-run museum and part of the track is still open to visitors. This low-key campsite is set on a large arable farm in central Suffolk in a convenient location half a mile from the A140 and the small village of Wetheringsett. The larger town of Stowmarket and the A14 dual carriageway are a 15-minute drive away to the west, meaning almost all of East Anglia is within easy reach. This is a dog-friendly site that's very close to a good number of cosy country pubs. The nearest are about a mile away, but the site owners recommend bringing a bicycle for the full Suffolk pub crawl experience.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Ideal rural location to decompress and relax in beautiful surroundings. Well maintained site with plenty of space to ensure privacy.

I slept, in the open under a basic tarp and was greeted at 4.30am by a Duck which was a lovely encounter with the wildlife and my wildlife camera picked up a fox and a Muntjack.

The toilet, shower and washing facilities were ultra clean. I will return and would definitely recommend for a short break.

Disliked: Was surprised to note their is a dog training business next door. Although I love nature, my stay was disturbed by dogs barking and reacting angrily to each other's presence. Thankfully this was short lived and only happened a couple of times but I think this should be more obvious when booking.

I can imagine the toilets get overwhelmed quite quickly when the site is fuller.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Excellent site. Very generous pitches, if it wasn't for a large family (who were no issue) it would have been perfect.
Loos and showers were immaculate.
Plenty of space if enjoy peace and tranquility.
Very rural, not much noise. Not too near any shops. Budgens and a fuel station approximately 10 minute drive on the A140 going towards Diss. Local farm shop approximately a 10 minutes walk from site.
Bar for the mid Suffolk railway open every Friday night.
Chap who runs the site very pleasant and charming, certainly has got it correct with the set up.

Railway Wagon camping pod (four person)

Liked: Well kept space, more comfortable camping with upgraded beds:)
We had other families with tents that were allowed to pitch near us... The shower-room and toilet were cleaned every day, warm water etc.. dog park nearby is a bonus. We all had a great time and found lovely spots nearby like Thornham Walks were I also managed to arrange art session for our girls last minute with a local artist who has a studio there- worth visiting:)
The owner Tony was very friendly and checked on us and offered helpful tips.
Only thing I would suggest considering is adding outdoors sun umbrellas (or trees) we were lucky with the weather but was too hot for me to sit outside the rail wagon for lunch and stuff- we hiked and travelled daily but also wanted to stay one day in but I founded too warm without any shade - so if possible please consider:)
We all had overall a great stay and highly recommend this space:)

Powered grass site

Liked: Great size pitches, good location, easy to get there.

Disliked: Toilets x2 showers x2 aren’t private and not really enough if the site is full. Also could do with having a family area to camp and separate quiet areas in the other field. £30 for a couple is expensive but cheap for a family maybe considered per person charge like abroad.

Liked: Husband and I booked for a tent pitch (we have a roof tent). Friends (and their families) booked for 2 wagons and 1 carriage. We arrived there at 12:30. The whole place was very clean and quiet! Perfect place for our (rare) getaway/reunion! Thank you Tony for having us in your lovely camp site. Thank you for allowing me and my husband to park where the cabins are, so we could be all together as a group! We really enjoyed the place. Everything we need was there! And the owners made sure we were all safe and fine. Definitely we will come back - either as a group again or one pitch (couple)!

The place also has a dog park!
Everyone is welcome.

Railway Wagon camping pod (four person)

Liked: A fantastic campsite experience! It's great that the facilities were in good condition and that toilet/washroom beside our wagon is 10/10 for me coz i dont need to walk like 3km to just reach for the toilet..
Thats why i really like it its just 20steps away.
Having hot and cold showers and clean toilets can make a big difference when camping.
We're satisfied with our first time experience at the campsite.
Tony provided excellent customer service.
This is a place worth going back to!😘😘

Disliked: Not disliked really but the toilet lock needs to be fix, thats it..🙃🙂
Nothing else.

Local attractions

After taking the kids to learn about old-fashioned travel at the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway Museum (five minutes' walk), take them off for animal encounters, agricultural insights and pony rides at Easton Farm Park (30 minutes' drive), or venture in the other direction towards Framlingham Castle (30 minutes) for family-friendly adventures on a medieval theme. If you liked that, then Henry II's unusual polygonal tower at Orford Castle (50 minutes) should be right up your street too. While here, make time to take in Orford village's pretty traditional cottages and welcoming pubs, or follow the sound of the waves and explore the wild wetlands of Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (50 minutes). More coastal capers await at spectacular spots such as Aldeburgh (55 minutes), Thorpeness (an hour) and Southwold (an hour), all of which are located within the gorgeous Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Birdlife abounds in this biodiversity haven – your hosts particularly recommend grabbing a pair of binoculars and heading to the well-camouflaged hides at RSPB Minsmere (an hour) and Walberswick (an hour).
