Combine a romantic couples’ retreat with a farm stay at Whiskers and Woods in Suffolk, and your relaxation is all but guaranteed. Visit this wooden shepherd’s hut, 10 minutes’ drive from the pretty village of Eye in late summer and you’ll catch the harvest in full flow – but whenever you stay, the sounds of foxes, deer, owls and other birds going about their business are all that will surround you. The hut has a digital radio and no TV or wifi – but it does have underfloor heating and all the amenities needed for a relaxing stay. Namely: a fridge, microwave, kettle, crockery and so on in the well-equipped kitchen, where tea, coffee, milk, orange juice and a small breakfast hamper are all supplied. Bed linen is provided on the properly comfortable double bed, and there’s a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, a basin, towels and bathrobes. The compact, open-plan living space contains a pull-up table for two and a cosy sofa. There is an outdoor cooking area (a guide in the hut lists local pubs if you’re not into alfresco catering) and a swing chair for warmer days, plus a private hot tub for a restorative soak after fun-filled days out in East Anglia. Walkers and cyclists will find plenty to keep them busy from the hut or in the Suffolk and Essex Coast and Heaths National Landscape (45 minutes’ drive).
