  • Bell tents at a Norfolk working farm a mile from Feltwell
  • Ely and Thetford Forest within a half-hour drive; an hour to Cambridge
  • Off-grid tents with comfy double bed and barbecue/firepit provided
Fancy the sort of rural break where your nearest neighbours are likely to be a couple of friendly pigs that live in the woods? It might sound like the sort of situation you’d find in a delightful kids’ book, but in fact it’s also the reality at West End Farm Glamping, part of a Norfolk working farm. In fact, you may spot a few humans too, but there are only a handful of bell tents at this spacious glamping site – and they’re well spaced around the four-acre meadow so you should have plenty of space to spread out and get comfy. Getting comfy inside the tent should be easy too, as each of the five-metre bell tents is kitted out with a luxurious double bed made up with good-quality bed linen. Tents are off grid, so there’s no electricity but you’ll have solar/battery lighting and a kettle so you can make a cup of tea to relax with. And if you’d prefer to chill out in the open air, that’s easily done as you’ll be provided with outdoor seating and a barbecue/firepit (plus firewood to feed it with). Shared facilities include an outdoor kitchen and a compost toilet (but please note there are no showers on site). A mile away, the local village of Feltwell has a couple of well-stocked shops, a fish and chip shop and a good pub that serves lovely food and local ales. For more extensive amenities you’ll need to travel to Brandon (15 minutes’ drive), Ely or Thetford (both half an hour).

Local attractions

If you’re in the market for outdoor pursuits, start with walking trails and a Go Ape adventure course in Thetford Forest (20 minutes’ drive), or bring your sketchbook to follow the artist-led audio trail in Brandon Country Park (15 minutes) and see what inspires you. There’s also the chance to go fishing at Blackdyke Trout Fishery (five minutes), play a round at Feltwell Golf Club (five minutes) or take your binoculars out birdwatching at RSPB Lakenheath Fen (10 minutes). Mixing in a historical aspect should be straightforward too, if you head to the neolithic flint mines of Grimes Graves (20 minutes) or the ruins of Thetford Priory (half an hour). For a change of scenery, spend the day in Ely (half an hour), visiting the cathedral, stained glass museum and Oliver Cromwell’s House, or head to Cambridge (an hour) to tour the colleges and try your hand at punting on the River Cam.
