  • Back-to-basics camping in a wildflower meadow on a Worcestershire farm
  • A 30-minute drive to Stratford-upon-Avon, Worcester and Malvern Hills
  • Off-grid wild pitches with walks on site; farm shop 20 minutes’ drive
On a secluded wildflower meadow in Worcestershire countryside, Berrowsfield Farm Meadow Campsite offers simple, back-to-basics pitches. Its location at a working arable farm means there’s an abundance of wildlife around at this peaceful, dog-friendly base for anyone who loves being outdoors. While this quiet wild camping spot has fab views across countryside, plenty of space to wander around on farm walks and quiet country lanes for cyclists and hikers to wander, it’s also close to Worcester, Stratford-upon-Avon and Evesham for big city days out. Inkberrow village (20 minutes’ walk) has a handy farm shop and a couple of historic pubs with cosy fires and beamed dining rooms, and further afield you’re spoilt for choice with tea shops, cafés and inns in old-world, half-timbered villages. Being off-grid, there are loos and cold water taps on site, but no showers. Firepits, gas stoves and disposable barbecues are allowed (but not open fires please), and the owners provide slabs to put them on so you don’t burn the grass. Remember that it gets very dark at night and there’s no electricity, so a torch is essential – but the lack of the light pollution means you can enjoy fantastic stargazing under clear skies.

Local attractions

History abounds in Stratford-upon-Avon (25 minutes’ drive), where you can book plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and tour the gardens of half-timbered Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Evesham (20 minutes) has a slew of black-and-white townhouses, plus walks along the River Avon, while Worcester Cathedral (half an hour) is worth a look around for its Gothic architecture and jewel-coloured stained-glass windows. If you’d rather be country bumpkins on your camping break, ignore the towns and head to the Malvern Hills (half an hour) for days of walking with spectacular backdrops. Studley Common Nature Reserve (15 minutes) is known for its circular walks and the chance of spotting deer, while you can go fishing at Coppice Lake (five minutes) and challenge friends to golf games on several courses less than half an hour’s drive away. Mix up fresh air with a bit of culture and wander the landscaped gardens at the National Trust-owned Coughton Court (15 minutes), a magnificent 15th-century mansion, or check out the Palladian splendour and formal plantings at Ragley Hall, Park and Gardens (both 15 minutes).

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Very very peaceful, great to get away and fully relax. Ideal spot

Disliked: Two portaloos. Looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for ages, the smell was unbearable

From the manager: I apologise to you and all others regarding the toilets. They were hired in for the 2 months the site was open on a contract that they were serviced every week but this they did not do dispite many phone calls and emails. I, once made aware of the problem made sure there was toilet paper, paper towels and water for washing hands but I do not have the facilities to empty the waste. I spoke to several guests and explained the situation but sorry due to work commitments I was not able to meet everyone. For future years I will not be using that supplier for toilets as they have spoiled a lot of your stays at a site that has had a lot of very positive reviews, thank you.

Quiet, secluded and just what we were looking for.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Lovely, tranquil little field that worked very well for a wild camping feel. Plenty of space for tents to be far enough apart that we felt almost as if we were the only ones there. Perfect for a quiet night away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Unpowered grass trailer tent site

Liked: Pleasant outlook.

Disliked: Toilet facilities abysmal. No presence of proprietor to put things right. Misleading information when booking re facilities. We were informed that there were no showers but NOT informed that the toilet facilities were 'Portaloos'. Some other campers hinted that the portaloos were a temporary measure but reviews (read since our visit) indicate they've been a feature for years.....so NOT temporary at all.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: The field was very tranquil, the amenities were very simple but fine. We very much enjoyed our stay. The owners were very kind and thoughtful. It was hard to find the site though, since the site is up Bowery Lane, but our navigator said our destination was on the road itself. And when you get up the lane, there is a very small sign saying 'campsite'. But worth pursuing! Lovely views.
