  • Peaceful site on an organic farm a 15-minute drive from Worcester
  • Malvern Hills 15 minutes’ drive; Witley Court and Gardens 25 minutes
  • On-site café; veg boxes and eggs for sale; classes and workshops
Surrounded by spectacular countryside, Camping at The Fold is a peaceful site between Worcester and the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which embraces a philosophy of sustainability and creativity. Guests can take their fresh pick of the flat, grassy pitches, where the pitch sizes are not restricted (within reason). The pitches are part of a farm which grows organic vegetables and keeps free-range hens. You can buy these happy chooks’ freshly laid eggs for your breakfast, as well as seasonal veg boxes, or sample them in assorted dishes (and cakes) at the café. The site’s eco credentials continue with multiple composting toilets, a hot shower, renewable energy, charging facilities for electric vehicles and plenty of recycling stations. There are plenty of nature trails and a lake trail on site, along with public access to the river Teme. Well-behaved canines are welcome as long as they are kept on a lead while on the grounds; the aforementioned trails are also sure to get tails wagging. And who knows? Your wanderings might lead you to a local pub (there are a couple within a 10-minute walk) for a restorative brew. The Fold is also home to a natural therapy centre where guests can book a relaxing Indian head massage or a reflexology session. And if you don’t want to skip your regular sun salutations, there are yoga classes (from vinyasa flows to seated sessions), plus all-level Pilates and sound baths. (Please note: all must be booked in advance. The varied calendar of activities also includes activities like sewing workshops, bushcraft experiences or foraging picnics.

Liked: the sheltered location and the hygenic compost toilets. The wild plums in the hedgerow were amazing!!

Disliked: The opening and closing of a couple of gates every time you took your car through to load/unload was a bit of a pain. The singular, central "communal" fire pit was tiny, smaller than I would use on my own. with it being the only ground fire allowed, I was expecting a large dish style brazier or the likes so everyone could gather around it, although ideally multiple smaller firepits which campers could choose to pitch around would have been awesome. 2 compost toilets could be a stretch at busy times and one was so high that at 6 foot my feet barely touched the floor when sitting, so a foot rest infront of it would be welcome. It cant be helped but phone signal is a bit off an on, but thats the wilds for you.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Beautiful simple campsite, situated on an organic farm. Sinks for washing up, composting toilet and shower. Recycling facilities. Great place to see the stars on a clear night as very little light pollution. Lots of things to do around the area and lovely on site cafe, great place to get breakfast.

Disliked: If you are sensitive to noise then you may be aware of the traffic sound, which is unavoidable when in such an urban surrounding, and is also present on many other campsites in similar locations. The sound of birdsong is very noticeable too, yet more pleasant than the traffic and amazing to hear such variety.

Liked: Cafe on site was good

Disliked: Not like the photos, toilet situation was so bad we left before even pitching our tent. 2 emails to the fold and nothing back, not even anyone on site when we arrived to complain to

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Can pitch your tent with your friends together. Small field but well spaced out. Easy access to lovely walks and much more if you drive.

Disliked: It is a compost toilet which I admire but results in a smell, not sites fault (when people don’t use it properly, instructions are in the wall) and was cleaned up quickly. Grass a little long which made pitch site choosing a little limited.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Great staff. Very friendly, accommodating and helpful. Awesome walks, the lake and river are beautiful. Pitches are large and well spaced out. Toilets and shower were good. Running water.

Disliked: Lots of discarded fishing line around the lake. My partner got caught up in the line and tripped up.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: It was quiet and dark even though it wasn’t far away from a main road. Vegetarian cafe on site with WiFi and very nice cakes. Washing up area with hot water. Quantity of wood given for the fire. Friendly welcome. Nice pub in walking distance (14 mins). River looked nice for a swim. Geese flying over first thing in the morning and last thing at night. We visited The Time Machine which is small but worthwhile if you are a Dr Who, Red Dwarf or Star Wars fan.

Disliked: The camping signs were a little hard to spot. Not clear where to park your car or where to drive for unloading the tent. No one there when we arrived, we eventually found some instructions behind an unmarked door next to the shower. WiFi to the tent is mentioned online and there was a signal but the password was not advertised. Not clear where it is possible to swim in the river, lots of signs saying no swimming. We eventually found a good spot 9 minutes walk away, not far from the reservoir. Not clear when we booked the firewood if a fire pit would be supplied or not. Found out that you can bring your own as long as it’s raised off the ground or there is a patch in the middle of the field that you can use for a fire on the ground. The path along the river to The Fox Inn was a bit overgrown but probably passable with trousers.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Great eco site; friendly; facilities all clean (composting toilets are good). The field is a little uneven, and no grassy spots for pitching, but it is level and quiet. Good to be able to drive onto the site to unload, but then have the benefits of no cars on the field. Cafe and veg shed are both excellent, as is the river side walking on the doorstep.

Disliked: No car policy was not enforced, meaning noise from car doors 2/5 nights. Also music is allowed. Most people did not play music, but again 2/5 nights we had background noise. We did suggest that the site bring in a no music policy as it is such a peaceful spot.

Local attractions

Worcester is home to a splendid 11th-century cathedral with vertiginous Gothic ceiling vaults and colourful stained-glass windows. You can learn all about the local ceramics production at the Museum of Royal Worcester, or visit The Firs, birthplace of the composer Edward Elgar. Known for its spring water, the Malvern Hills AONB is laced with woodland trails and off-road mountain-biking routes. Climb to the top of the Worcester Beacon for expansive views (as far as Wales on a clear day) or to the summit of British Camp, site of a hill fort during the Bronze Age, Alternatively, come along after dark to partake in a spot of stargazing. Witley Court and Gardens (25 minutes’ drive) was destroyed by fire in 1937, but even in its ruinous state, this 17th-century country mansion looks remarkably elegant. The landscaped grounds feature topiary, terraces and a dramatic fountain, plus a children’s playground.
