Makins Lakes: Lake and pitches

General

  • Fully serviced pitches with 24-hour access to on-site fishing lakes
  • Around 30 minutes’ drive from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester
  • Café, wheelchair accessible facilities, parent and baby washroom

Would waking up and walking just a few feet for a spot of fishing be something of a holiday win for you? And how about finding that around 30 minutes by car from Warwick, Birmingham and Leicester?

At Makins Lakes, in the village of Bramcote and 10 minutes’ drive from the Warwickshire town of Nuneaton, your pitch won’t just be close to a peaceful peg, you’ll also have a long list of Heart of England holiday highlights close by.

Of course, the lakes on site aren’t just for the enjoyment of anglers. Being by the water brings a peaceful feel to all the pitches. There are views over the Warwickshire countryside too, but this isn’t a middle-of-nowhere kind of place.

Each pitch is hooked up with electric and water access points. The shower and toilet block have accessible areas for disabled guests and there’s also a family-friendly parent and baby washroom. There’s an on-site café and bait shop and if you can’t bear to leave the lakeside, they’ll even deliver food out to you so you need not stop fishing all day.

When you’re ready to rest your rod for a bit, it’s a 25-minute drive to catch a bit of culture in Coventry (UK City of Culture 2021) or 40 minutes to Stratford-upon-Avon, the must-see town for all things Shakespeare.

Please note

A charge of £0.50 ($0.92) applies for the use of the shower.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

Beautiful lakes, good location, nice park for the children, on site cafe, fully serviced pitch, shower and toilet block with underfloor heating. Husband attempted fishing for the 1st time and caught a whopper.

    Disliked:

We visited Easter Bank Holiday so I expect it was a busy time for Makins but the toilet and showers could have benefitted from some additional cleans and the bins around site were overflowing and needed emptying.

Friendly staff, easy check-in, easy park up, very quiet, fairy level pitches
We didn’t use the fishing facilities but they looked well kept and popular

    Disliked:

    Pitches close together.
Central grey drain for use by several pitches was too far away, at least 10m away across 2 pitches.
People were booked to use grass pitches but it was too soft so they used a hard standing pitch and we had to go ask for our electric point!

    Disliked:

Noise from the motorway. On a fully serviced pitch but it is a long way slightly uphill to the grey waste drain so was not able to use it. Also electricity tripped at main box a few times during stay. Plus on website it says no check in before 2pm and checkout before 10am - not sure if this actually applies to tourers but I see no reason for this - surely an hour between checkout and arrival is enough time?

Friendly staff on Reception and pretty lakes to enjoy. Shower block very clean and finished to a high standard (also very warm!).

    Disliked:

One of the first comments we heard from the staff was "careful, its very muddy down there - one couple almost got stuck this morning!". So very muddy! We were also advised by someone who seemed to be a long term resident on the site that the first pitch we came to would flood, so we were very limited for choice of a pitch away from a flood plane. On the whole, the site was very nice, but not worth the £52 we paid for the night, and just be prepared for mud.

From the manager...

Hi Kayleigh,
We do apologise for the mud after the storms we had the ground didn’t cope well to the amount of rain unfortunately!
We have however, already started to make more hard standing pitches and we are hoping to have every pitch changed to hard standing this year!
This should solve the issue of the British weather!

Thanks!
Makins

Local attractions

If you’re in the mood for a quiet picnic or woodland stroll, Coombe Abbey Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is a 500-acre parkland made for whiling away a day outdoors. There’s also a play area, zip lining and climbing forest if the family’s up for an active day. Or you could always try out the angling here too if your break really is all about fishing.

Entertaining the kids shouldn’t be too tricky around these parts either. Immerse yourself fully in the medieval world of dungeons, knights and princesses, jousting and falconry with a visit to Warwick Castle (35 minutes). Or scream if you wanna go faster at Drayton Manor Theme Park, home to rollercoasters, Thomas Land and a 15-acre zoo. Animal antics of all kinds are also order of the day at Twycross Zoo (30 minutes).
