  • Back-to-basics dog-friendly site in the north Warwickshire countryside
  • NEC 20 minutes’ drive; Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre 25 minutes
  • Spacious pitches on a well-kept field; country walks to village pubs
When it comes to camping, there are different types of ‘back to basic-ness’, and at Hipsley Field you get what many might consider to be a pretty good version. At this north Warwickshire site, you'll be completely surrounded by proper countryside – but with the shops and pubs of the market town of Atherstone a convenient 10-minute drive away. The spacious site is easily accessed from the M42 motorway (which is about 2.5 miles away); not that you would ever know it, for the well-maintained field is at the end of a single-track lane surrounded by open countryside, giving the impression of being miles away from anywhere. There is a water supply on site, but not much else, so remember to bring your own equipment and gadgets, including a well-powered torch since there is no lighting, except for the moon and the stars. Please note that there are no toilet or shower facilities, either. What Hipsley Field does have, however, is access to a large network of public footpaths and bridleways that you can explore with your canine friend by your side (dogs are welcome at the site). There are also a couple of traditional pubs serving food within a half-hour walk. If you want to improve your handicap, Atherstone Golf Club is 10 minutes’ drive away, and there’s indoor skiing at the SnowDome (15 minutes) and trade shows at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC, 20 minutes).

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: The large field surrounded by trees. Really small and usually quiet I imagine but some party was happening nearby that evening with music, but it didn’t bother us or our young children. Really great stopover.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked: If you are off grid then this is the perfect location. Beautiful flat vast field full of wildlife, we saw monkjack deer, barn owl and many squirrels in the wooded areas. Beautiful walk through quiet countryside and into an ancient church. If you are planning to stay in the area this is a must. We came for the night before an event at the NEC just 25 mins away but this will be our ‘go to’ now. Helen gave us a lovely warm welcome and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Beautiful very large quiet well cut field with a warm welcome and a nearby country pub with excellent food. Best to arrive from Tamworth direction to avoid single track lanes.

Local attractions

A large area of wetlands, Kingsbury Water Park (15 minutes' drive) is criss-crossed by paths and bridleways for walking and cycling, and dotted with hides from where you can observe kingfishers and other birds. You can also get a day ticket for fishing, have a go at geocaching or ride the Echills Wood miniature railway. There are more watery activities at Cliff Lakes (15 minutes), where you can bounce, slide and climb to your heart’s content on a humongous inflatable adventure course, or have an introductory paddleboarding lesson. There are also year-round wild-swimming sessions. You can make the historian in your party happy with a trip to Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre (25 minutes), on the site of the 1485 battle that cost Richard III his life. After walking the Battlefield Trail, check out the exhibition of medieval metalwork unearthed at the site.
