Bursts of colour to liven up your stay
Well-kept grounds
The moat

  • Peaceful, well-maintained park in the grounds of a landscaped garden
  • Close to the A50; a 20-minute drive from Alton Towers
  • Barbecues permitted; two pubs within a mile's radius
Fancy treating yourself to a sumptuous stay in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse? Park Hall Farm in the Staffordshire village of Church Leigh is a quiet site within easy reach of the gardens and high-adrenaline thrills of Alton Towers, the UK's biggest theme park. Head here for peaceful times and space to set up all your holiday accoutrements – the plot sizes are generous, meaning you can look forward to a bit of extra comfort and privacy. For food, you may like to grill your own grub on a barbecue or head out to one of the two pubs located within a mile of the site. For the nearest supermarket, drive 10 minutes up the road to Cheadle. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at Park Hall Farm – you can be pretty sure they'll appreciate the walks to be had around the site and in the surrounding countryside. For proper outdoor adventure over rugged terrain, make tracks for the Peak District National Park (about 40 minutes' drive).

Liked: Quiet site. Friendly host Clean toilet showers

Disliked: Showers and toilets to far a walk. Shower was either boiling hot ir freezing cold. Would have been nice to have a bigger shower screen to stop water splashing everywhete. A nightmare tp find. Way off the beaten track. 40 min to Alton towers

Liked: Beautiful, clean open space Electric point (optional) Clean facilities close by Rubbish point close by Friendly owner and easily contactable

Disliked: The only thing I would say if I had to was no recycling point for new camping equipment packaging - bins were for black bag rubbish only. But this wasn't a huge issue at all.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Very clean site, short grass, well marked areas. Great contact with the host. Emails with the site map, messages sent to confirm the check in. Late check in hours giving you plenty of time to arrive. There is a box with farm produce to purchase at the entrance (jam). 20min drive to the local Co-Op for food as local pubs do not offer any food. 30min drive to Alton Towers.

Disliked: Farm traffic right next to the tents started early before 7am (behind the bushes there is a big yard with tractors/farm equipment). But, yeah, I should maybe know that as the name of the site mentioned 'FARM'. It is working farm. Bad phone reception.

Local attractions

Once you've ticked off Alton Towers (20 minutes' drive), take intrepid kids go-karting at the National Forest Adventure Farm (30 minutes), Go Apeing at Cannock Chase (35 minutes) or pony trekking at the local riding stables (15 minutes). Drayton Manor (50 minutes), another top-tier theme park, is also doable for the day if you're staying at Park Hall Farm. (Kids turned away from the biggest rides at Alton? Drayton Manor has more rides accessible to kids under 120 centimetres.) Action-packed activities not pushing the right buttons? Chilled garden explores are on the cards at the Trentham Estate (25 minutes), where there's a mile-long lake, a cascading weir and acres of fab foliage. Other floral displays can be seen at Shugborough Hall (35 minutes), a stately home with walled gardens and a hands-on farm museum. Last, but emphatically not least, is Chatsworth House (an hour and 10 minutes) with its 25 square miles of ornamental grounds. For other ways to sample a slice of the high life, spend a while watching horses clearing hurdles at Uttoxeter Racecourse (15 minutes) or settle in for a soak at Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat (20 minutes).
